i'm a huge fan of love & rockets, and in the '80s they were one of my absolute favorite bands - so much so that i referred to daniel ash as "daniel ash, a/k/a my boyfriend" all through my freshman year of college. lol

that said, i do not consider love & rockets to be "important" at all. just very, very cool. BAUHAUS on the other hand...

I dont think that they were the most important band of the 80's, but they definatley had their niche. When Earth Sun Moon.. was released I thought it was a great album. It wasnt until I got older that I realized how spiritual some of their songs were. Stuff like "Kundulini Express", their "Ball of Confusion" cover.. Actually Most of the ESM album was pretty insightful stuff, coming from a group of guys in pixie boots.

'earth sun moon' is the only album i can think of that's made up of songs about eastern philosophy...it runs through most love and rockets songs, but ESM the most.

LOVE this band. No, I wouldn't say they were the most important band of the 80s, but they were one of the most criminally under-rated.

I love how these guys appeared on the scene with everyone expecting them to do a bunch of gothic stuff like they were doing in Bauhaus. Instead, they released all this cool, psychedelic music that delved into Eastern philosophy and esoteric mind-sets.

Nor did I! Apparently, if you get the Sorted! DVD, and put it in your CD player, it has the Bubblemen EP on it! Can anyone confirm this?

I think you've forgotten a little band called the News, which featured a singing harmonica player named Huey.

is that their greatest hits CD? i've been putting off buying that for the longest, because i already have 'the haunted fishtank'...though love and rockets on DVD would certainly be sweet...and if the bubblemen tracks are on it as well, even sweeter! maybe i'll netflix it and check it out...

It is the name of the DVD, as well as the greatest hits. If you have all the remastered L&R albums, then the hits CD is kinda pointless, unless you just are dying to have the single version of "Ball of Counfusion" on CD.

cool, thanks! i didn't realize it had solo videos on it. i might have to run out and grab this over the weekend...i was wondering why it was a little pricey, now i know it's because it's packed with stuff.

this'll be a nice way to get geared up for seeing bauhaus next month! woot!

While the two bands are basically the same members, with the exception of Peter Murphy, I really don't see the point in comparing them. Bauhaus was the pioneer goth band, while L&R are a psychedelic rock outfit. To me, the two really don't sound that much alike.

well, that was kind of my point, though i'm sure you picked up on that.

i hear a lot of similarity between bauhaus and love & rockets - when i listen to L&R and peter murphy's solo stuff, i can hear how the two asthetics fused to create bauhaus's sound. i think 'burning from the inside' sounds a lot like a love & rockets album - for obvious reasons, considering peter murphy was too ill to record most of it - but i think daniel ash's guitar is a huge part of the bauhaus sound, and that stays pretty consistent throughout all the projects he's been part of.

[p.s. - i just ordered a copy of SORTED at overstock.com for a measley 16 bucks!]

'seventh dream of teenage heaven', 'express' and 'earth sun moon' are brilliant albums in my opinion - everything after that starts to lag, though there are some nice moments on the 'lift' album. i think L&R thrived in the '80s, and even if they made a downright genius record in the here and now, they'd have a hard time getting it appreciated outside of a small group of longtime fans.

Seventh Dream.... Thanks! I couldnt remember the name of that album. I could see the cover, but.. anyway, yeah I really dug Seventh Dream and Earth Sun Moon. I dont think I really gave Express a chance, although the singles were really good. I bought Lift for $1.00. It had one really cool techno-ish song but the rest was kinda shitty. I wonder if they'll do a Tones on Tail and Love and Rockets segement during this tour.

i doubt it - a bauhaus show is usually pretty intensely its own thing. plus, if they had a ToT/L&R segment, they'd have to include a peter murphy solo segment...not that i would mind that at all, but it would take too much focus away from all that great bauhaus material.

I've never seen them, although I did have Shadows in Light back in the day. It came on USA one night. Great concert, with the Ziggy video at the end.

They definitely should stick to Bauhaus material when touring as such, L&R when touring that way, etc. I can understand if Murphy does some Bauhaus stuff when he's solo, but that is about it. The two groups have such a different aesthetic, that I really don't think it would flow so well.

On a related topic, does anyone else here have the sampler disc that was included with the copies of Lift at Best Buy? Its a cool little cross-section of stuff by all the different permutations of this band (Bauhaus, L&R, ToT, Daniel Ash, David J, Peter Murphy, etc).

I can hear the similarity, most certainly. Ash's guitar is a big factor in my love of both bands. I just think the two bands were trying to accomplish VERY different things. The whole feel of the two bands is (quite intentionally) different.

I TOTALLY agree on your comment about listening to L&R and Murphy's solo stuff to see how the two styles merged into one. I quite enjoy Murphy on his own as well. That is, perhaps, the coolest thing about this whole family of bands, that I really find myself enjoying whatever project happens to be at the forefront at the time (though I'm not wild about David J's solo stuff, but even that has some gems)

i found that used at my local wrecka stow for cheep a year or so ago! i'd been looking for it for quite some time and i thought i'd end up having to pay out the nose on ebay for it! i already owned lots of what was on the disc, but i do enjoy having it for when i need a quick all-over bauhaus family tree fix.

oh, i think there are huge differences in L&R and bauhaus, too. stylistically, i don't think they were going for a dark or "goth" asthetic. i think they were allowing themselves to be lighter, sillier, more "rock", more dada. meanwhile, i think when peter murphy started doing solo stuff, he went in a more poetic, nuanced direction - i actually think his solo work is far MORE serious than his work with bauhaus, though it's certainly more subdued.
