Caldera - Sky Islands (1977) EWF's Larry Dunn any of y'all old-heads ever heard of this album?
Definitely one of the most innovative Jazz-fusion groups of the late 1970s, Caldera was a band that combined Jazz, funk and rock with a wide variety of Latin music, bringing to mind not only Return to Forever and Weather Report, but also everything from Earth, Wind & Fire's soul/funk, to Santana, Afro-Cuban salsa rhythms and Brazilian samba. Sky Islands was produced by Earth Wind and Fire's Larry Dunn, who also played additional keyboards and Synths on the album. * Another Earth Wind and Fire connection - Caldera's keyboardist and leader, Eddie del Barrio, collaborated with Maurice White on Earth Wind and Fire songs like "Fantasy", from All n' All, and "Miracles", from the album Powerlight. * A then-unknown Jazz vocalist(and friend of Philip Bailey's) named Diane Reeves lent her vocals to the haunting, EWF-like song, "Ancient Source" (Reeves would later remake the title tune, "Sky Islands" for her Blue Note debut album ( "Better Days" was the hit single)... del Barrio co-lead the band with Guitarist Jorge Strunz( who later gained fame as part of the guitar Duo Strunz and Farah).... From AMG: "...Members of the group Caldera came from all over Latin America as well as parts of the U.S. While bassist Dean Cortez and saxophonist Steve Tavaglione were U.S.-born, other members were born in Costa Rica (Strunz), Argentina (del Barrio), Cuba (drummer Carlos Vega) and Brazil (percussionist Mike "Baiano" Azevedo). In 1976, Caldera signed with Capitol and recorded its self-titled debut album, which was followed by Sky Islands in 1977, Time and Chance in 1978 and Dreamer in 1979. In an ideal world, Caldera would have had a long life, but its four Capitol LPs (most of which weren't reissued on CD) didn't sell—and the band called it quits in 1979. However, most of Caldera's members kept busy long after its breakup. Strunz, for example, went on to form the guitar duo Strunz & Farah with Iranian/Persian guitarist Ardeshir Farah, while the 1980s and 1990s found del Barrio working with everyone from Earth, Wind & Fire to Stan Getz and Dianne Reeves." ... I bought this album this past January, and I played it on my radio show every now and then. I swore I heard another version of "Sky Island" sometime in my life. The Dianne Reeves version of "Sky Island" is the one I'm familiar with (my favorite version btw). I saw a few more of their in the record bin but I bought Sky Island instead, glad I did.

Yeah, their other albums are cool, but IMO, Sky Islands was far and away the best... ... " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout
