What about the way Tyra Banks speaks? I was watching a shwo where they called her way of speaking a blaccent. Meaning she turns ghetto then white when she talks. I think that is insulting and stupid.

The label, you mean, right? Cause if so, I agree. People should be able to be fluid and changing in the way they talk. It's not like we're all just ONE THING, and we have to filter everything through that.

I agree, actually. One thing that I've discovered through traveling ALOT on an international scale is that most countries have a range of accents and dialects based on region, level of education, traditional home communication, etc., the US is no different...if I had to go through a scenario of fleeting phone conversations with my parents/older relatives, my sister/close girlfriends, the Alumnae Boards from my alma maters, friends and professional colleagues from the different regions I've lived in the U.S., I pretty much have a different way of speaking for each one of those situations...all fully fleshed out and very much representative of who I am as a college educated black American chick from the midwest with relatives from the deep south who has lived on both coasts and in the the quasi-country known as miami florida.... wink

I don't think she's forgoten where she comes from rather than, let's face it, she hasn't LIVED in the US for what 20 years, at least? Who does she have in her daily life to talk to that will have her keep her authentic Nutbush Tennessee acccent in check????

People don't seem to understand how much you lose of your formative dialect when you spend ALL your time speaking other languages in order to survive in your adopted home(s) overseas, and particularly if you are not surrounded by other native English speakers, your accent becomes HIGHLY enunciated by daily habit because you spend your LIFE trying to make yourself understood by your hosts confused

the standare American accent has not real abnormal stresses so i've been told, it's like a blank canvas.

Once you move from America to another English speaking country you pick up their stresses and so therefor pick up an accent.

And it's only a fairly recent thing the British part. Around the Turth or Dare era Madonna started dicate her words more. It was her arty Dita period and i think it was just part of the character.

There are few interview since then where she sounds normal. Most of the time I don't notice. She's Madonna. she can talk however she wants at the end of the day she is still Madonna.

I'm sure it's rough being her, so if she wants to talk like a brit for awhile more power to her, at least she isn't butching her nose.

Good point...I mean, Mel's native accent is pretty much gone, and Charlize, who I actually had the pleasure to work with when I was a young stylist assistant, has one of THE THICKEST accents imaginable...while you're at it, add Portia di Rossi to that list, too...where the heck is HER accent?

I think Mel is an American who lived in Australia, and his accent sounds both American & Australian.

As for Rick & Charlize, at least they sound natural. Madonna sounds like she's forcing it.

It's cool to hear everyone's opinion on this subject. I wanted to bring it up because i've heard so may negative comments on it including one from Kanye west where in Blender magazine he said " i think i'll move to london and get a fake ass accent like madonna". Seriously I can't understand, how people don't understand that when you live in a different country or region than the one you were born in, you can adapt the accent. Why do people react to it so negatively??

Because people will always want to see a person stay in one place to make it easy for them to handle them.

Thing is, people like Madonna and Tina Turner aren't even proper Americans anymore. They have embraced a life that includes living abroad and people can't handle them changing.

I think Tina Turner lived in Switzerland (?) for so long, it's like a century removed from Nutbush (thank [deity]), just like it is way back for Madonna, being white trash.

These people moved on, so should any person getting worked up over accents. Please, grow up.

And Kanye West should just embrace his OWN faith; come out of the closet and shut up, the little bitch. Some people have opinions on everything and everyone without using that superior wit on themselves.

I think it got worse after Evita but I blamed it on her vocal training. It sometimes happens to people when they study voice and/or accents and period pieces. Proper diction is a large part of it.
