My general feeling is, who cares how Madonna or Tina talks? They're singers. I care how they sing. And on "American Life," I don't like it so much. [Edited 10/5/05 10:12am]

Madonna's like Keaneau Reeves. There's something weird about changing the way you speak after adulthood.
Watch Desperately Seeking Susan. That's probably how she talks at home. Check this song out at:

Look, who the hell cares at the end of the day, really? If Madge wants to be English, I'm not gonna try and stop her. This is funny because my friend was complaining about this the other day. She thinks that Madge is fronting too with her faux British accent, when in reality she was just an Italian-American girl from Detroit who moved to New York and hit it big.
The way I see it, her accent came to be because she adapted to her enviornment. She and her family live in England, so of course she's going to adapt to that way of living and culture and dialect and stuff. The same would apply to Tina Turner. If you live in a certain territory long enough, it's going to present itself even in the way you speak. Sure, there are some exceptions (myself included), but in most cases that's how it is. I'm sure they haven't forgotten their roots, but I don't think that they should be representing their back story either. Let's face it, they both had pretty rough upbringings. They felt that they deserved a better life even if it meant moving up in the class system, which is essentially what they did. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

And I think judging a person based on the way they speak is stupid and superficial anyway. I think what they say is much more important than how they say it. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I know plenty of people who moved to the U.S. over 20 years ago that never lost their accents. Check this song out at:

Are you English? If not you might not appreciate thast she talks like a bad actress's idea of an upper class English accent. Wait a minute, she IS a bad actress isn't she ....I rest my case. Actually I am british but was raised in NY them moved back to London, now i'm in Cali so my accent is mixed. I just kind of think her speaking voice is a bit annoying but I always have. The brit thing doesn't bother me the way it does everyone else.

What about the way Tyra Banks speaks? I was watching a shwo where they called her way of speaking a blaccent. Meaning she turns ghetto then white when she talks. I think that is insulting and stupid.

The label, you mean, right? Cause if so, I agree. People should be able to be fluid and changing in the way they talk. It's not like we're all just ONE THING, and we have to filter everything through that.

Although I've only lived overseas for a few years, I have spent half of my adult life around non-English speakers in both work and my domestic environment...my accent is what it is because I am immersed in a certain cadence of speaking for 12 years now as an international citizen of the WORLD.... ....the funny thing is that my black accent probably isn't considered so much of a hip or even "ghetto" accent , as opposed to sounding like someone's old ass southern grandma: probably due to having my parent's and grandparent's dialects imprinted on my hardchip... I swear by God the last time I was in the States I turned on the WB and had trouble catching everything that everyone was saying! All the new slang was just going by me waaaaay too fast and it really took a couple of days to settle into...people don't understand, when you are living in a foreign culture you are totally IMMERSED in that culture with little to no chance to speak your own American dialect...it's pretty easy to lose a lot of the accent(S) of your formative years... I will say though, that, I have found that people who eventually move to the UK always go a bit more over the top than those in non-English speaking expat situations; to enunciate so that one can be clearly understood by our hosts is one thing... even careful choice of vocabulary words I can understand, but once we get to the "tomae-to, tomaah-to" scenario, it does become (as we say here across the pond) a tad "proveciale"...
