Three Dog Night - "It Ain't Easy" (1970)

...

OK, I'm goin' way back on ya.....one 'o My favorites from Back, back in the day....

Anybody got this Lp in their collection?

Three Dog Night "It Ain't Easy"

before they were known as the AM-friendly Pop meisters, TDN put out somewonderfully arranged Rock albums, and this was one of the best, a combination of Fuzzed out Rock/Pop with Funk, R&B and even Folk influences added to the mix. In addition to a few originals, it featured songs written by some of rock music's best, but til then unknown, composers. The album is probably best known for the Randy Newman-penned classic, "Momma Told Me Not To Come", which turned out to be Three Dog Nights first #1 hit. It also features " Your Song", by a newcomer named Elton John (He had written another song, "Lady Samantha" for one of their earlier albums). This version of Your Song predates Elton's own version by a few months. (He gave them the song in '69, but also recorded his version, and his original hit the charts at the same time as TDN's cover, But his rose to the top first, and the rest is history).....

The album also includes another Randy Newman composition, "Cowboy", which was originally written for the film "Midnight Cowboy"( The film's producers turned it down in favor of Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talking"....

There are more great tunes like the the opening track, "Woman"...they take the song and break it down to a slow, funked-up slither, similar in feel to the Band of Gypsyies' "Who Knows"...If You like early Westbound-era Funkadelic, you'll probably dig this track...another hit on the album, "Out In The Country" shows their softer, laid back side. , The band is smoking -- Michael Allsup on Guitar, Floyd Sneed on Drums, Joe Schernmie on Bass, and great keyboard work by Jimmy Greenspoon, with the gurling organs rotating Leslie Cabinet effects--- great vocals throughout also, especially on "Woman", , "Rock N Roll Widow", and The rousing track, "Good Feeling" their hilarious ode to to 50's Doo Wop groups...

MCA had released this on CD back in the 80's, but soon deleted it. A Japanese importversion showed up in 2002 , but I believe that may be out of print also. This thing needs to be reissued!!

Out of the POP groups that I can think of at the moment, outside of early Chicago they had the 3 lead vocalist attack nailed.

They always chose great tunes to cover.

I had their first...

..."Three Dog Night"

One and Chest Fever were two of my favorites.

And as paligap mentioned, Mike Allsup (guitar), Jimmy Greenspoon (keyboards), Joe Schermie (bass) and Floyd Sneed (drums) was a slammin' and underated band.

If any one finds Live at the Forum 3 Dog Night .....Please let me know. My dad had this on vinyl and lost all his 3 Dog night stuff in a house fire sad. He actually heard them live in a small club in Yakima WA.,before they played the Forum. He said they played the whole set list at that club. So the record has special meaning to him.

I have only a greatest hits set by Three Dog Night. From this album, Mama Told Me Not to Come is bad! Makes me think of Boogie Nights whenever I hear it.
