Great thread, namepeace. I don't really own any Jazz and was gonna dig in my friend's crates for some of his stuff. He's got Bird, Miles, Thelonius, Coltrane and Sara Vaughan compilations. I don't know where to begin.

No problem, sty . . .

In my humble opinion, I would recommend the obvious:

John Coltrane -- A Love Supreme

Miles Davis -- Kind of Blue

Miles Davis -- Birth of the Cool

Then a few compilations:

Thelonious Monk -- Genius of Modern Music Vol. II (Blue Note)

Ella Fitzgerald -- Best of the Songbooks: Love Songs (Verve)

Charlie Parker -- Bird's Best Bop on Verve (Verve)

Duke Ellington -- Duke Ellington's Finest Hour (Verve)

Miles Davis -- Volume One (Blue Note)

Louis Armstrong -- Jazz Masters (Verve)

Horace Silver -- Horace Silver Trio (Blue Note)

Bill Evans -- 'Round About Midnight (Verve)

That'll cost you about 12.00/CD (less if you use iTunes or Napster). And jazz CDs are always on sale.

These CDs to me run the gamut of styles for pre-electric/fusion jazz.

My strategy was to read the liner notes, and if I liked a particular solo, to check out the soloist. I became a fan of Cannonball and Bill Evans on the strength of Kind of Blue.

Happy listening!

Oh yeah, for an updated "re-interpretation," try Madlib's Shades of Blue (Blue Note).

He's got talent, but to be honest, I don't buy a whole lot of new stuff. Roy Hargrove and Nicholas Payton are a couple of contemporary artists with albums I've purchased recently.

I just got in2 jazz earlier this year. I'm 23 years old and I've been going back 2 the old school of jazz, and my wife HATES it! I first took a chance on Mile's Kind of Blue cd which is good, but I find Coltrane's music more complex and 4 me his music is a far better listening experience. I do want 2 beef up my Miles collection though. So far this is what's in my collection:

miles davis-kind of blue (dual disc with cd on one side and dvd on the other), and one with him doing some sessions in the 1940s though I can't remember what it's called.

John Coltrane- A love supreme (2 disc deluxe edition), Impressions, Blue Train, Crescent, Live @ Birdland.

I really would like 2 try out some thelonious monk, and Gil Scott-Heron, but I don't know where 2 begin with them. Any suggestions?

Funny, that's about where I started.

As for Monk: Try the Genius of Modern Music Vols. I and II, as well as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane.

The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is a good place to start with Heron.

'Sketches Of Spain' by Miles, my all time favorite jazz-record.
I also like 'Quiet Nights' (with Sketches.. outtakes on it).
And everything from The Miles Davis Quintet 1956.
My favorite compilation would be 'The Gentle Side Of John Coltrane', especially the tracks with Johnny Hartman.

BT, Quiet Nights, IMHO, may be the most underrated of the Miles albums that I own (a fraction of his discography). It's exquisite.

It might be.. I never hear anyone talk about it when discussing favorite Jazz albums. You think it's up there with his classics?

Not quite. It's just underrated. No one talks about it.
