14th Anniversary of Miles Davis' Death

Fourteen years ago today, Jazz Great Miles Davis passed after battling with a myriad of health issues. Not only was Davis a legendary jazz artist, the man was one of the coolest MF's on the face of the earth. As Majors and Billison wrote in their book Cool Pose there were only a handful of cool people in popular culture and Miles Davis was one of them. Not only was he cool, the man also stayed true to self even when those around him couldn't get up with his actions. Davis' defiant manner and strong sense of self is a reflection of the times and they are traits that we probably will not see from a mainstream artist in the future. I just thought I'd start a thread discussing Davis' numerous works and his impact on music and culture. In A Silent Way, Sketches of Spain, and A Tribute to Jack Johnson will be on heavy rotation with me today.

I got to see him for a few minutes at one of his last gigs in Stockholm. I was 10 at the time, maybe just gotten 11.

"Blow" was the tune I had on repeat from this CD.

Probably part of his ongoing quest to stay musically relevant.
I'm guessing he would've moved on to something more challenging.

The interesting thing about Miles is that on one hand there was "Cool", but on the other hand there was this fiery intensity...

I was thinking about something Joni Mitchell said about Miles, not long ago. When asked to comment on Miles' women and their influence, but also his treatment of women, Joni replied, "it iteresting that some of my heroes (including Miles and Picasso)could be described as "monsters" --- I mean "monsters" in the sense that they have such a restless creative energy and spirit that they tend to consume everything around them, be it ideas, or other human beings..." (actually, this sounds a lot like Prince, too, now that I think about it...)

I think I'll pop in a little Sketches of Spain myself. It's been awhile since I last heard "Solea". smile

Gifted, troubled, agitated, flawed, mean, abusive, beautiful, inspiring, without peer.

The Death of The Cool did not extinguish his legacy or his lasting gifts to us.

Rest, finally, in peace, Miles.

Very true indeed! Mitchell's comments are dead on and they speak to how complex of an individual he was. He was a multifaceted person, with amazing talents, and major flaws. That's why the cat will always have immense respect from me, he always had his eye on the future/progress and he seemed to stay true to himself.

And yes Prince behaves in a VERY similar fashion, especially in respect to his views on music, his career and his hold on women. I think that's why they got along so well and could relate to one another on multiple levels.

Good call I love that album. If you don't have Get Up With It, I highly recommend it. That is another classic from his fusion period. That first disc alone is worth the price of the album! I think I will be spinning it tonight as well. cool
