Hendrix: Band of Gypsies DVD ok, ive stated that me bein' a Hendrix Fanatic since 4, i never dug the Gypsies.. solely cus of Buddy ( chicken callin) Miles. showtime has been runnin this documentary and Holy shit. its pretty gawdayum accurate and tight they re interviewed "the Twins", who were on the 1st Hendrix documetart that came out in the late 70's.alot of things i knew and alot shed light on some questions i had.
like for Instance Buddy claims he quit... wrong Jimi fired his ass for one tryin to steal the spotlight, and for 2 his serious drug habit.. now Jimi wasnt perfect but dayum it never interfered with rehearsals or other wise. except one night at Madison square garden when Jimi showed up an hour late and someone gave him some bad shit. he drops buddy re hires Mitch, and they go back out as "the experience" deep stuff.

Funny , i saw a documentary about Jimi
where Buddy was going on and on about Jimi's drug habit and how he (Buddy) cound't bare to see him high on stage , he was almost crying I like The Experience better too , Buddy's drumming is boring and his skills are sub par compared to Mitch's [Edited 10/3/05 10:10am]

With all due respect to Buddy "Sugar Bear" Miles (cool drummer/love him)..I think he was using Jimi as a stepping stone (no pun intended) to put a big impact on his career. I think he wanted the spotlight just as bad. Eddie Kramer even said Buddy would carry on and on with the songs until Jimi would have to edit Buddy out of the songs (Gypsys is a perfect example). I 've seen videos w/ Buddy from Santana to Jeff Beck to Sly Stone and he really tries to be this dynamic frontman. I think Jimi decided to get Mitch back because he musically challenged him.

I think Mitchell was definitely a better drummer for Hendrix...from what I recall ...it was never Jimi's intention to "replace" Mitch permanently...Mitch was vacationing in England when the "BoG" event went down...
Cox for Redding is a whole other story ,tho.... "...all you need ...is justa touch...of mojo hand....."

i have also heard MANY stories about jimi lending him bread all the time...buddy seems to be a 3rd rate dude trying to ride the jimimobile...IMO

...
Personalities (and Rooster singing) aside, I think Buddy Miles' playing brought out a different aspect to Jimi's 's playing-- the laid-back feel brought out more of a Funk thing -- probably wasn't as musically challenging, but it's still great, it's a different feel, one that I haven't heard Mitch replicate... I remember Narada Michael Walden mentioning an an interview that he was traveling across the country in late 69 - early 70', hoping to audition for Hendrix because he thought he could be the All-around drummer for Jimi. He noted that "while Mitch had the jazz-rock thing down, Buddy had the heavy R&B Funk feel. I felt that I could do both...." Whether he could or not, the point is that Mitch and Buddy were good at different things.... ... Yup, Who Knows is exactly the track I was thinking about. I've also heard diffrent takes of "Power of Soul" with both drummers. The Buddy Miles versions are a lot funkier... ... " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

"Foghorn Leghorn" might have been a "Toon" at times but his R&B chops were impeccable.
I saw him when he was Wilson Pickett's drummer. Extremely powerful pocket. The Buddy Miles Express... And before that The Electric Flag... ...with Mike Bloomfield) were 2 of the underated horn bands of the 60s. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. It's Ironic that he really doesn't do any rooster crowing on his own stuff. Guess he was "excited" that night. I always wondered why they didn't just edit that part out....If I understand it correctly, he was just ad-libbing while Jimi ducked out to replace a broken string.... ... Anyone of you guys listened to the 'Baggies rehearsal sessions' released by Dagger Records? Its the Gypsies rehearsing for the old years night gigs and it is AWESOME, The versions of 'power of soul' and 'ezy rider' are great. Also on 'burning desire' Cox and Miles do some great vocal harmonizing.
Buddy Miles was/is a great drummer. He and Mitch are like chalk and cheese.

Agreed. I have the dvd and it's cool. Jimi clicked with Mitch damn near from the get. At first, Jimi or Chas wasn't crazy about Mitch's attitude and was leaning towards Dunbar. Jimi and Chas tossed a coin, and Mitch won out. Fate has a way of doing it's thing. I dug the hell out of the Band of Gypsies though. Billy runs complete circles around Noel on bass. Noel never wanted to play bass anyways, and it showed. Noel was there cuz Jimi dug his hair, period. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
