Sound Directions is the newest creation from producer and arranger Madlib (one half of Madvillain). The group began as an offshoot of Yesterdays New Quintet in 2003 as a part of Madlib's "Shades of Blue" album. "The Funky Side of Life" represents Madlib's first full length collaboration with session musicians on drums, guitar, keys, and brass. [Edited 10/3/05 14:00pm] hey, you might be surprised! probably not, but you might! i really don't have an ear for pop music produced in the late '80s/early '90s, it's true. i understand that it's aging into the disco of its time, and probably within the next ten years, stuff like color me badd and c+c music factory will be coming back with a vengeance as young'uns start to discover it and people who lived through it the first time will be coming back to it as some kind of nostalgia trip. everything gets recycled. but as of now, i can't go there. it all sounds way too one-dimensional to me, plus i really don't like the style of house/dance music that informed a lot of the top 40 stuff around that time. it just ain't me. not that there wasn't music released during that time that i don't like...it just didn't fall into that whole genre/formula/whatev. but there ARE exceptions. what they are, i couldn't tell ya right now... | |
