Actually, I don't think that emo as a genre sucks; it's just that most of the emo bands sound exactly alike. How do you tell the difference between Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, Dashboard Confessional, All-American Rejects, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy, et al, when they all have the same sound and similar lyrics, like "I hate myself and my life/my girlfriend left me for some dude with a car/my parents are always in my face/yet they fight all the time/yada yada yada." Some of these bands are actually great live bands, but you wouldn't know that by watching them on MTV (the "Helena" video excluded).

I think that this may be a generational observation, but the one thing I've noticed about a lot of these bands and their fans is that while they may attempt to look like serious punk rockers or goth figures, they look way too conformist amongst each other and do not have any individual style. The other thing I've noticed is that lyrically, their angst-ridden lyrics have to do with being overly pressured or overprotected by their parents and other authority figures, which is a sea change from the grunge days when Nirvana and Pearl Jam sang about how parents didn't care at all about them.

I can't keep it straight: Emo, Screamo, Emocore .....it's all rock to me. shrug
A band either has songs or it doesn't. I don't care what they call it. I am suspicious whenever anyone says an entire genre of music sucks.

It's a stupid name for a genre. Emo. At the end of the day, that just blows.
