I neither like nor dis-like BET... I watch some programs.. others I don't. I can watch a program or turn the channel and can do so with out dis'ing the entire network. Also, I'm very familiar with Paul Mooney's routine and long ago came to an understanding of why he never optained greatness as others did using some of his jokes (I must stress 'some of'... they knew the good ones from the bad.... he never had the ability to self edit)I'm not the self-righteous or over-critical type who makes a habit of judging everything based on some standard... Typicaly, I just take things as they are. .
My entire family watched the BET Comedy awards. Up till the point Mooney took the stage... they were going OK To those who did not watch the original run or know exactly what was said... you really shouldn't post any comments defending what Mooney said because any thing you say is un-informed and actually makes you sound more in-sensitive and / or ignorant than he did that night. As I said, typically I don't cast judgement on things but... for humor like his to work.. it should be topical. Something every one could relate too because it is current news. It's 'easier' to see the humor in some things when it is the topic of the day. He compares his comments to Leno, Letterman and others (while pulling out the race card may I add) but that's exactly what they do... they joke about current topics which may have a humorous twinge to them. If it had been recent news, people including, and probably more so... Tracee Ross, would have been more prepared mentally and emotionally for those types of attacking jokes. This was a topic 2+ years old was a topic on NO ONES mind, which just came out of no where and no one was ready for. And to add to that he went after the step father too...??? WTF Didn't most of us have parents who discussed that there is a line to draw where something isnt funny but is just tasteless and mean? Even if you feel that Diana Ross for some odd reason deserved to be degraded by this idiot for her drunk driving or that the presence of Tracee Ross should not have detered his 'dated' jokes... what in hell could any one ..even if you didnt here it first hand... think would be funny craking jokes about the Jan. 2004 mountain climbing death of Ross' husband and Tracee's step-father, Arne Naess Jr.??? If he had just left it at Ross alone. maybe it would not have been as bad, but he didnt; and since they are directly related topics... it really drove what he said home as malicous personal attacks. I can't quote the jokes (me and my wife were too busy cringing and explaining to our kids this is NOT what a perosn should do) but let me attempt to illustrate the feel the jokes had: Imagine if you will, you are at an awards ceremony... you have just left the stage after receiving an award for your academic excellence. All your friends and family are there. A speaker gets on the stage after you and decides to make a few... ice breaking jokes... He calls them the 'Dumb white trash awards'. First he makes a joke about how your mama was arrested after being pulled over for DUI; he even got a slide show with pics of your mama in hand cuffs and police pulling the crystal meth from where she was hiding the it, under her sagging breast. The punch line is,"...the way her tits were saggin' she could have hid the whole freakin'lab"... of course this event was from three years ago. Then he makes a joke about your father who just died that past summer from lung cancer because,"...he was 'dumb white trash' and thought the 'Surgeon General' warning on cigarettes didnt apply to him because he was never in the military." What Mooney said used much more offensive and sharper language and to a national audiance. If you justify this kind of humor... then sorry... you too are mean and ignorant; I hope that if you are ever in a similiar situation..that you would find it funny then, and laugh as loud as everyone else at your mother and dead step-father's expense. If you don't then add hypocrit as well.

For Traci Ross, if you know you mother drives drunk and people know about it, get ready to be embarrassed about it and take it like a man. That is show business and fame. It aint all champange, cherries and ass kissings. Diana Ross has been fucked up for years and someone called her on it. That don't make no muthafuckin' difference! Fucked up or not have some respect for somebody. If he was makin' the jokes without Tracy in the room fine, but if he knew she was in the room and he has some personal vendetta against Diana or Tracy settle it another way and in private, don't embarrass her like that in front of everybody! I tell you, you folks talk alot of shit and would be the first one to whip Paul Mooney's ass right up there on stage if he said somethin' about you mama and it was true too. Ah hell to the naw!

Yeah we get it! TV in general is crap, believe me, I won't argue that!! However, I will say that the cast of "Girlfriends" do an adequate job in comparison to the rest of the portrayals of women of color on television today! I don't know about you but the last time I checked, "video hoe" didn't qualify as my reality.
"Girlfriends" is by far, a more "realistic" view of what's going on where I live! Therefore, crap, is not a term I would use to describe it! Especially, if I'd never seen it! [Edited 10/11/05 17:40pm]
