Marcus Miller, good musician? He can do a lot of insane slapping/popping stuff on the
bass but do you think he's a good musician? Official member of the Paw Power Posse

MM loves Prince and has done many covers, but as far as musicianship goes he puts Prince to shame. Prince blows him out on vocals, cuz MM simply can't sing worth a damn. MM has made his mark on Miles, Luther and his own albums. One of the best bass players around and recognized as an innovator. test

I respect his craft, but his production puts me in snooze mode. Also, his 'fresh strings'-bass sound annoys me.
I caught his set at a jazz festival, in which he featured Lalah Hathaway - good show. She did 'Killing me softly' and sung an acapella song. Then, two years later, I mistakenly thought he was promoting a new album, and was served the exact same show, extended to a full clubset, minus Lalah. All in all, we did feel robbed. I did not pay to see Marcus noodle around on all the instruments available on-stage, just to show he can. His guitarist, Dean Brown, is amazing though. They should be capable of delivering something fresh live.

He plays piano AND Fender Rhodes piano AND keyboards AND clavinet?!?!? Synthesizer AND moog synthesizer. Why beef it up like that. I could probably list a hundred instruments that I play if I listed it like that.

I grumbled and groused cuz there was too much of her. I wanted "mo' bass mo' bass", but Lallah was such a crowd pleaser with the pop-jazz contingent I just muttered into my beer and was decidedly unhappy. (Mind now that MM brings out passable jazz fans, hardcore jazzbos and bass aficianados, of which I'm the latter two). Maybe 2 years later MM came around to do a club date. Lallah was to be featured, so I hemmed and hawed, but eventually made it down for a set. Lallah only did 1 selection and was gone, but MM's performance was much better! Lots of "noodling" on the differnt basses and the "Amazing Grace" feature on bass clarinet had me banging the tables and yelling like a fool! The band was outstanding, drummer Poogie Bell had me rivted with his great playing. On the way out I heard some couples grousing "Where'd Lallah go?" I was just a giddy ol' bass lovin' fusion-geek! Notes It's true he kept the same setlist for almost 3 years, but I saw him again on the SILVER RAIN tour and that's changed to incorporate newer material. Also, Dean Brown was not with him. test

This is amazing.
I was just thinking today: "You need to start a Marcus thread. Boy doesn't get enough respect or mention at this site..." And, here one is. Marcus loves a lot of the same chord styles as Prince, but he comes more from the schools of Miles and Stevie. Has a real knack for multiple bass lines, like P does, but is far more technically proficient than Skipper. Marcus will break your face on so many instruments... But he's absolutely KILLER on the bass. And, a big fat to the cat who doesn't like MM's tone!!! You probably wouldn't believe how sought-after that sound is!!! Amazing...

And dang!!! I've been going nuts over the bass part to Jonatha Brooke's "Room in My Heart" for over a year, and it turns out it was Marcus!!!!
I want to scream. I love what he does on that song, beginning to end. And, I'm glad that's MM layin' it down like that. Mercy. Too cold.

I'd like to break down the concept sound into tone and playing style, the latter being a factor that weighs just as much as the former. Anyway, I come from the Jaco camp.

I hear you (Marcus does a mean cover of "Teen Town," by the way, on his The Sun Don't Lie release. It's no joke. I think tone and sound actually trump playing style. I hear Clapton play, and I study the composition of his runs. MOST of the time, he's not doing anything jaw-droppingly astounding, but it SOUNDS head and shoulders above other players' riffs. It's all part of the tone and sound (and the fact that he's a very, very good player...) Marcus is a great player. But, I've heard other bass cats kill their axes without sounding as compellingly good (to me) as Marcus. It's his tone. On The Sun... and Tales, his tone is outstanding. His tone on Silver Rain didn't strike me as being as sweet. But I could be wrong.
