Church Oakland are pleased to announce the Bay Area Saving OurSelves (SOS) concert, an East Bay response to the overwhelming needs of Hurricane Katrina victims. The concert will be a Hip Hop and Jazz extravaganza held at Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center Oakland, October 1st, 2005. Proceeds from concert will be donated to the NAACP Katrina Disaster Relief Fund. Overflow parking will be available at Alco Park located at 165 - 13th street. Shuttle busses will run between Alco and the concert. The eclectic mix of musical genres promises to have something for everyone and produce a seamless afternoon of great music. The day will begin with 4 hours of world class jazz and gospel starting at 12 noon and going to about 4PM. Jazz trumpeter and educator Khalil Shaheed has pulled together an incredible lineup staring legendary vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson and featuring New Orleans trumpet giant Nicholas Payton. From 4PM till 8PM or so, Hip Hop enthusiasts will be treated to live performances by some of Oakland's own legendary Hip Hop and R&B recording artists including Too Short, and Keek Da Sneak Tony Toni Tone's Dwayne Wiggins has assembled a who's who of the Bay Area Hip Hop scene. Brooks, Wiggins, and Shaheed all have been deeply touched by the tragedy, (all have roots in the south). Also performing: Babatunde Lea, Ernie Watts, John Handy, John Santos & Machete Ensemble, Mingus Amungus, Claudia Velella & Ricardo Peixoto, Oakland Interfaith Choir & Allen Temple Church Mass Choir & B-Legit, San Quin,EA Ski,Charlie O The unwillingness of our government to respond made it crystal clear that we need to now and in the future be able to respond on our own to help where it is needed.
