I much prefer 'Tonight' - even though the production sounds really dated and the album was released during what is popularly thought of as Bowie's big creative slump, there's some really fantastic vocal work on here and it also has one of my favorite Bowie songs ever, "Loving the Alien". I also dig the title track, "God Only Knows" and (for some godawful reason) "Tumble and Twirl".

In my opinion, 'Never Let Me Down' is just plain depressing. I remember liking it when I was 17, but I was just getting into Bowie and I didn't know any better. The more I realized how wonderful all his older albums were, the worse this album sounded to me. The only song from this album I really like is "Time Will Crawl".

I remember Bowie saying that Loving The Alien was much better in demo form. It really is Tonight's only redeeming feature for me (I ain't even that fussed about Blue Jean, altho' I think it's okay) so I wouldn't mind hearing said demo at some point.

Dave, if you're reading, call round for tea and bring things. smile

I've not yet collected the balls neccisary to tell my wallet we're going to go out and purchase Never Let Me Down, but I will say that Tonight is for the most part musical sewage, other than the usual favorites, of course (Loving The Alien, Blue Jean).

Edit: Oh, I do kind of like Dancing With The Big Boys, because the lyric "Your family is a football team" put the hilarious image in my head of a child being born in the middle of a really intense huddle, and subsequently being raised by a pack of meatheads.

I wonder how David thinks about Never Let Me Down nowadays... smile

he was asked by an audience member when he presented REALITY live which he thought was his worst album.

he said (laughing) it was NEVER LET ME DOWN.

I never heard Never Let Me Down, other than the first single. I'm afraid of Americans is the only single I've liked from him in a long time, though I bought Heathen and it's good.

I had Tonight when it came out. It's okay. I like Blue Jean, Loving the Alien. I was surprised years later when I heard Lust For Life and found there were a few songs from it on Tonight. Bowie must have been rushed to follow up Let's Dance and lacking material (he also covers God Only Knows)

Better to stick with the 70's, Bowie's golden period.

i've read a couple of times that he wanted 'tonight' to be kind of a 'pin-ups pt.2', but it kinda mutated.

I think he's had plenty of great singles since his 70's heyday. It's just that most of them that have gotten any attention have been from the 80's.

I'm talking after Blue Jean. Day In Day Out, Jump (they Say), Heart's Filthy Lesson haven't moved me that much.

I think...

Loving the Alien
This is not America
Absolute Beginners
You Belong in Rock N Roll
Jump They Say
Black Tie White Noise
Hallo Spaceboy
Strangers When We Meet
Little Wonder
Dead Man Walking
Seven Years In Tibet
Thursday's Child
Survive
Slow Burn
New Killer Star

are all amazing songs. and those were just the singles.
