25th Anniversary Of John Bonham's death

Today is 25 years since John Bonham (Bonzo) of Led Zeppelin died. sad I always wonder where Zeppelin would have gone musically if this never had happened.

Anyway, here's a martini on you Bonzo! R.I.P. and I hope you and all your friends like Moonie are having a blast up in Rock and Roll heaven. nod Here's to an awesome drummer!

Thanx for posting this...

Bonham was the best Rock drummer so far...

It's hard to gauge what might have been...but I have a feeling Zeppelin was on the way out anyway...Its hard to imagine how they would have fit in in the new wave 80s....Apperantly, the Punk movement of the late 70s was very anti-Zep...

On the other hand, groups like Van Halen and Def Leppard flourished in that decade (80s)... and most Punks couldn't play anyway... razz

so who knows... wink

You're welcome. biggrin

I know what you mean about the 80s. In a way, I'm sort of glad they went out on a good note boxed and that's not to say in any way that I'm glad one of the band members died or anything, but I think we're left with some really awesome albums. nod I also think something drastic would have happened even if Bonham hadn't died, most likely Jimmy being the one to go out. He was so deep in the heroin at that time. sigh

There are interviews though where Jimmy has said that right before Bonzo died, he and Jimmy were talking about their next album being a really hard rock one. Not sure what the other band members thought of that, specifically John Paul Jones, since he was sort of taking the lead on the last album. hmmm Anyway, that album never came into being. sad

Funny about the punks though. Page and Plant always had problems with Johnny Rotten whenever they ran into him in clubs, because he would ridicule them for being dinosaurs, etc. rolleyes But Page and Plant also were big fans of The Damned and would often go to their concerts and be harassed by the punk fans there. sigh

I've read articles where some punk band members who once shunned Zeppelin, years later admitting to secretly liking them. lol And when I listen to some bands now, that were supposed to hate them, I really do hear a classic rock influence anyway. shrug It's all connected anyway.

Btw, I am a huge fan of most old school punk bands, but I always thought that rivalry was ridiculous. As if there can be only ONE style of music or something. rolleyes

Check out this months issue of MOJO Magazine, with a cover story on Bonzo and his demise. The article pulls no punches either, on all sides of his personality and behaviour. And I especially enjoyed the article where Dave Grohl compiled his favorite Bonham moments . Any Zep should run and get this issue

(Actually, any real music fan should pick up MOJO regularly, easily the best music magazine out there )

I won't throw bricks. biggrin

He was found at Jimmy Page's house dead in bed after drinking about 40 shots of vodka. Like Cloudy said, he choked on his own vomit. sad His roadie had put him to bed the night before, and said he laid him on his side, but when they went to wake him the next morning, he was on his back and dead.

Richard Cole (Zeppelin's tour manager) said that when he heard that one of the band members was dead, he immediately thought it was Jimmy Page because he was such a junkie at that point.

As I've posted on here several times, Bohnham has always been one of my fave drummers, ever. His pocket was brilliant, and his kick was always clear, no matter how many doubles or triplets he played. His son is a motherfucker on drums as well.

nod

I haven't actually heard Jason Bonham play. I know he played with the Zep members a couple of times after his dad died, but I don't have recordings of that.

Here they are in '75 though...

There it is. U can tell in "The Song Remains The Same" that the kid was a natural. His posture and everything spelled "this shit is easy". He was tearing that drumset up.
