It is probably a remark torn out of it's context. It only takes one fansite to obsess about it.

Kanye West 'White People Should Make White Music

Rap sensation KANYE WEST has hit out at white musicians who try to sound black, insisting artists should stick to what they do best.

West confesses to a diverse listening taste and is even a fan of British rocker FRANZ FERDINAND. He says, "I hate music where white people are trying to sound black. The white music I like is white.

"I like Franz Ferdinand. That's the sh*t."

Kanye is a fucking idiot. It's comments like this that make me sick. He's such a racist pig!! No wonder there is so much hate in this world. People like Kanye have such big chips on their shoulders and have nothing better to offer than shit music and racists remarks!!

I supposed mixed raced people such as Slash have NO business playing hard Rock music in Kanye's eyes.

Kanye does not even bother me anymore. I totally see through what he's doing.
Dude is trying so hard to be like some hip hop version of Madonna that says and does whatever he can to be provocative, thus keeping his name in the paper and his mug on the cover of every mag. Hey Kan, you're music should be doing that, dawg; not you're lip.
Whatever. As George Harrison said, All Things Must Pass. Eventually, the media will pass Kanye like some collard greens (sprinkled with a lil' vinegar) and dude will be forced to just let his music (or whoever's music he's sampling) do the talking.

I guess it depends on who he thinks started rock & roll. He prolly gives more credence to Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino et al, as the orignators. White people just "got in the way" and copped the vibe. biggrin (I'm sure this sracasm going to be misunderstood).

Ah yes, but GnR were more Punk influenced, and that's "white" music biggrin I suppose it's OK though because Slash is mixed - but there's always that "one drop" rule that seems to make Mariah Carey black lol

OR... Kanye, how about just stop putting people into little boxes? Surely living in a multi-cultural society is a good thing. These comments only contribute to the myriad of racial problems in society today.

Im not 100% about what he's trying to say here, but what I took from that was that he was saying people should keep it real, to not try and be what your not. If you want to take influence from black and white music, then fine, but don't try and be something your not. For example, Eminem has been extremely successful, and while his influence is black, i dont think anyone would argue he's remained true to himself in the music he's made.

If he did simply mean people should only make white or black music, then the guy is very very silly.

Why do you say he hasn't remained true to himself? And exactly what is meant by being true to yourself?

I hate that muthafucka.

Every time he opens his mouth, i want to bash his face in.

So, people's musical creations should be consigned to specific genres or "sounds" based on their race.? Uh, OK, you bastard.

When can we just be humans in the Universe, goddamnit. Why is everything about race. Race is not my most defining characteristic.

I don't negotiate music, political views, or philosophy based on race.

I hate this bullshit.
[Edited 9/25/05 15:22pm]

I agree with this. I mean if you grow up listening to great "black" music and you have a voice that is influenced by it, why couldn't you sing with that flavor. I think it's a huge compliment when people like George Michael, Boy George, Joss Stone site Motown greats as their inspirations.

please dont ever put joss stone's name next to the two georges.....
