Tracy Chapman "America"

snowflake

just heard this for the first time today. from her new album "Where You Live"
and altho the rest of the album is the typical soft semi-acoustic crooning as
we have come to know and expect from her, "America" caught me off guard.

wow, what a strong song. great melody. perhaps a slight bit repetitive but I
guess you could also call that hypnotic heheh. does anyone else on the org
have the album?

AMERICA

You were lost and got lucky,
came upon the shore
Found you were conquering America
Spoke of peace but waged a war
While you were conquering America

There was land to take and people to kill
While you were conquering America
You served yourself and did God's will
While you were conquering America

The ghost of Columbus haunts this world
You're still conquering America
The meek won't survive or inherit the earth,
'Cause you're still conquering America

America
America
America

Found bodies to serve, submit and degrade,
While you were conquering America
Made of soldiers and junkies,
prisoners and slaves
While you were conquering America

America
America
America

Your hands are at my throat,
my back's against the wall
You're still conquering America
We're sick and tired, hungry and poor
'Cause you're still conquering America

You bomb the very ground
that feeds your own babies
You're still conquering America
Your sons and your daughters,
may never sing you praises
While you're conquering America

America
America
America

I see your eyes seek the distant shore
While you were conquering America
Take your rockets to the moon,
try to find a new world
And you're still conquering America

America
America
America

The ghost of Columbus haunts this world
You're still conquering America
You're still conquering America
You're still conquering America

You're still missing two songs, aren't you?

biggrin

and yes, America is more on point than SST.
It rocks. I am in love with that folk theme
that flows through it. Killer song!

Definitely Tracy's strongest album since "New Beginning" - both "Change" and "America" are classic songs. Hopefully it does well!!

If I had been Frits Spits (*)I would have played America SO often...

(*) Frits Spits was the man that had the early evening radioshow when there was just ONE pop radio channel back in the 70's/80's. His show was SO wel listened to in Holland that he could make or break a song....

he was the first person in europe (or even the world) to play Prince's
"Dolphin" as the new single from The Gold Experience. Just days before
it was decided that it wouldn't go out as such.

sad thing indeed since it would have done so well back in 1994 sad

tchad blake produced this album and provides some interesting textures to chapman's sound.

america is the stand-out track but Be And Be Not Afraid is the heart (and pain) of the album.....

tears...the tears.
