John Coltrane seeing people start threads about almost anybody, I would like to dedicate this one to my personal musical hero and spiritual guide: Mr. John Coltrane.
to all the people here who are not so familiar with his music, I would highly recommend to listen, but listen hard. his work of art can be divided in three phases. 1. the hard-bop phase. when he started playing with the miles davis quartet, trane was still a junkie and only little more than a medium-tenor player. but everybody knew he had something about him. listen to him on "kind of blue". his early solo work in the late 60s is already quite impressive: from "blue train" (blue note) to "giant steps" (atlantic), "my favorite things" (atlantic) and my favorite of the early phase "ole" (atlantic). 2. the impulse years 1963-1966. thats when he became the innovative artist he is known as today. listen to the cut "out of this world" on "coltrane". the record "live at the village vanguard" is outstaning. and finally "A love supreme" - IMO the deepest music ever recorded. drives one to tears. 3. the avantgarde-period. 1966-67. only for the hardcore-free-jazzers. "Om" is an LSD-inspired session with pharoah sanders and a poem which makes princes babbling on TRC sound like nursery rhymes ("the clarified butter"?) or "live at the village vanguard again", which carries an amazingly fee version of "naima". for the JC lovers around here: how did you get into him? what albums did inspire you most and in which way? "Love Supreme" turned my life around when I was really down and brought me to the point of life where I always wanted to be at. the healing force of music... trane is its master.
