My order:
1 Zappa 2.David Bowie 3.John Lennon 4. Prince 5. Brian Wilson 6. Lou Reed 7. John Fogerty 8. George Clinton 9. Sly Stone 10.Billy Corgan why Zappa is my number one: he did it all, from freaky underground (Freak Out) to classical music (Yellow Shark). he had an opinion of his own, wouldn't sell out and was one of the first to stand up to the record industry. And he was like a god on guitar Bowie is my # 2 cuz he's an innovator. he brought us so many colours and sounds he deserves a star on the walk of fame in heaven. John Lennon created a fantastic body of music and influenced everything that came after him. he's the guru of pop. [Edited 9/24/05 10:23am] "Time is a train, makes the future the past"

And I was just going to ask why Gerry Rafferty was in there and I saw you edit. Don't get me wrong, there are a few of his songs that I absolutely love, but it just seemed out of place. And I'd keep John Fogerty where Gerry was anyway. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Nope. Overrated IMO. I don't get the sudden Brian Wilson hype that's suddenly popped up over the past couple of years actually. I just have never been able to get into the Beach Boys, let alone the holy "Pet Sounds" album. I don't have Smile though, but I doubt that would change my mind. I just don't like that whole sound. Unless Smile is COMPLETELY different from anything else he's done. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

The music is adventurous and flowing. it's breathtakingly beautiful. There's no way you can compare it to the 60's Smiley Smile it's so different. just try it, you won't be disappointed "Time is a train, makes the future the past"

I mean 15 years ago the Beach Boys were being laughed at with the John Stamos/full house shit. The man is a pop genuis and that's how I made my list.

Since you said "musicians", if I had to do a recording session...
Frank Zappa (#1 for the ability to also do orchestral/symphonic works) Sly Stone (vocals, keyboards and songwriting) Prince (vocals, various rhythm section instruments & songwriting) David Bowie (vocals & songwriting) Brian Wilson (for songwriting & vocal arrangements) John Lennon (songwriting) George Clinton (grooves & "out there" lyrics) John Fogerty (songwriting) Lou Reed (songwriting) Billy Corgan (? - I know who he is, i'd just have no use for him in this situation) ...Gerry Rafferty would have been more useful as a "musician". tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. I don't agree with the pop genius thing, but I guess that's just my opinion. I think the Beach Boys have their own unique sound. No one else sounds like them, and you can recognize who it is right away. I just have never, even since I was a little kid, liked that particular sound. Believe me I've tried, even recently, to see if I was just being stubborn/hasty in my opinion about them. But no, I still don't get it. My Order (Just personal preference)
Sly Stone-master on multiple instruments, fantastic songwriter, extremely good (and highly underrated) arranger and producer, great idiosyncratic singer. All round badass Prince-again, master of multiple instruments, great songwriter, arranger, ok producer, great singer. Not quite as much of a badass as Sly Frank Zappa-The ultimate iconoclast, master composer when he wants to be and at times masterful lyricist (rarely does he combine the two as effectively as many other great songwriters though and most of the time I think his music would be better if he just shut up), next to nothing as a singer, probably has the largest most varied catalogue with more extremes of brilliance and crap than anyone. Oh yeah, master guitar player and badass as well John Lennon-As A Beatle, fantastic. Without the others, he still had a couple masterpieces up his sleeve, but also made a lot of crap. Good guitar and piano player, great singer, superb lyricist and songwriter. George Clinton-P-funk as a whole outranks almost all of these guys in my mind. But George was really just the spokesman, he had a lot of great musicians and singers to thank for the sound and nearly every song/arrangment was made collaboratively. Withouth Bernie, Bootsy, Eddie, particularly, I think he would have been lost in the wilderness. However, a great songwriter (or co-writer), fantastic lyricist and producer, and a great "conceptualist". Brian Wilson-Insanely good arranger and composer, one of the all-time masters of harmony, great bass player (competant on several other instruments as well as far as I know, great singer. However, there's just something slightly cheesy or off-putting about a lot of the beach boys' music. David Bowie-the most chameleonic, at least competant on several instruments, sometimes great songwriter, not really a stylistic innovator though (despite effecting tons of styles), voice good but at times grating. I dig 'im, but I think he's very overrated around here I don't much care for the other guys
