"She's A Bad Mama Jama" by Carl Carlton
"Razzamatazz" by Quincy Jones featuring Patti Austin
"Try It Out" by Gino Soccio
"Shake It Up Tonight" by Cheryl Lynn

"Two Hearts" by Stephanie Mills and Teddy Pendergrass
"Double Dutch Bus" by Frankie Smith
"Running Away" by Frankie Beverly and Maze
"Lady (You Bring Me Up)" by The Commodores
"This Is For The Lover In You" by Shalamar
"Jones Vs. Jones" by Kool and The Gang
"Love On A Two-Way Street" by Stacy Lattisaw
"Pull Up To The Bumper" by Grace Jones
"Super Freak" by Rick James
"The Real Thing" by the Brothers Johnson
"Sweet Baby" by Stanley Clarke and George Duke
"Can't We Fall In Love Again" by Phyllis Hyman and Michael Henderson
"On The Beat" by the BB&Q Band
"Before I Let Go" by Frankie Beverly and Maze

That summer,I also recall watching a dance show called "The Scene" and hearing the debut single by a new band called The Time ("Get It Up") lol

More Summer of '81 Fun....

"Paradise" - Change
"When will My Love be Right" - Robert Winters & Fall
"Numbers" - Kraftwerk
"Yearning for your Love" - Gap Band
"A Little Bit of Jazz" - Nick Striker Band
"We're in this Love Together" - Al Jarreau
"Whatcha Gonna Do for Me" - Chaka Khan
"When Love Calls" - Atlantic Starr
"I'll Do Anything for You" - Denroy Morgan

Forgot the name of the dance tune by Bohannon, but it kicked-ass! I still hear it on the radio.

I loved the summer of '81. I was entering my senior year of college - ah, the memories. '81 wasn't as great as '84, but it comes close.

"Don't Stop" -- K.I.D.

Not sure whether it was a summer release, but 1981 is the copyright date on my 12" copy.

Oh, and I'll probably get flamed for this by knowledgeable funk fans, but I like the track "Connections and Disconnections" that was released in 1981 under the name "Funkadelic." George Clinton had nothing to do with the album... it was released by three of the original Parliaments who'd left the Mothership. It's currently in print as a reissue under the title Who's a Funkadelic? (The original release title was briefly 42.9% and quickly changed to Connections and Disconnections.)
Please note: effective March 21, 2010, I've stepped down from my prince.org Moderator position.

We had a similar thread on thePFunk board, but we talking about 1977. The funk album list included:

ALL N ALL - Earth, Wind & Fire
FUNKENTELECHY vs THE PLACEBO SYNDROME - Parliament
GO FOR YOUR GUNS - Isleys
ASK RUFUS - Rufus & Chaka Khan
GAMES DAMES & GUITAR THANGS - Eddie Hazel
REACH FOR IT - George Duke
HEAVY WEATHER - Weather Report
Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy, Baby! - Bootsy's Rubber Band
RIGHT ON TIME - Brorthers Johnson
SLAVE (debut)
IN FULL BLOOM - Rose Royce (offical debut)
LIVE AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM - Marvin Gaye
BRICK - (their 2nd album)
COMMODORES - 6th album; blue sky with logo; street-named ZOOM

Plus folks were still buzzing off SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE from the previous year.

Damn! that was my college sophomore year.

There's some decent tunes on C&D. This falling out within the PFunk empire was actually kind of funny to watch. Like a Keystone Cops thing with folks stumbling over each other. The other "Disconnection" was drummer Jerome railey's MUTINY a few years earlier.
