Great News: New Nirvana (kind of!) from: http://www.rollingstone.c...on=single1
Unreleased Nirvana Due
"Sliver" compilation to feature three more tracks from the archives Three previously unreleased Nirvana songs will surface November 1st when Geffen/Universal issue Sliver, a compilation of Nirvana rarities and demos. The twenty-two-track CD will be rounded out with material from With the Lights Out, the Nirvana box set released last November. Sliver marks the first time Frances Bean Cobain, the thirteen-year-old daughter of late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain and rocker Courtney Love, has taken an active role in her father's legacy. "We're pulling Frances into the family business," Love told Rolling Stone. In addition to helping select the title, Frances Bean also played a role in choosing the cover image. "Courtney and I involve Frances in Nirvana/Kurt decisions whenever we can," says Peter Asher, who manages Love and the Cobain estate. "She's very perceptive and has cool ideas." With the Lights Out was delayed for several years due to legal battles between Love and surviving Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, but there were no such troubles with Sliver. That just sounds really awful, sorry. "..the family business of marketing Kurt's death". Is that what you imagined?

it sounds like they are scraping the bottom of the barrel for material.
3 previously unreleased songs? why weren't they on the box set? sounds like unfinished song snippets or fooling around in the studio or a live inprov of some sort to me. but hey, i could be wrong.

i'd be fine if frances bean took over the licensing of kurt's estate and became more involved with this kind of thing as she got older - i just don't like the idea of courtney pimping out her daughter as if to say, "look! buy this! kurt's cherubic little pristine daughter helped make it!"

There is some unreleased stuff from their last recording session. I think that's when they did You Know You're Right. In the liner notes to With The Lights Out, it says they did like 8 songs that day.
Still, three new songs and the rest coming from WTLO doesn't excite me that much. WTLO was great to listen to once (and really only from a historical perspective), then I just made a redux of the best stuff (most of which had already been released). The DVD sucked except for maybe two songs. Check this song out at:

It makes a pretty good single disc, but three were a bit much for all but die hard fans (and maybe a bit much for them, too). It really is scraping the bottom of the barrel. Even the Beatles Anthology was better recordings than most of the Nirvana stuff. And the best of the WTLO stuff was the b-sides/rarities which had already been released! Check this song out at:

This is all true, but fans had been begging for this kind of release for so long, that I applaud the powers that be for making it fairly complete, thorough and well put together. I think now though, they just need to leave it alone and let the man rest in peace already.

I can't wait! Has anyone else heard the acoustic version of "old age" that leaked a couple months ago? It's beautiful! Keep your headphones on.
