This was a trying time for Bowie as he was heavily into drum & bass and electronics during this time.


I really loved the 1. Outside album and was very disappointed when part 2 failed to appear Still hope that it will surface one day. The concept was very Bowie, artsy and I loved reading the chaotic story of Leon, the minotaur and Baby Grace. The songs were very good, great songwriting and catchy tunes (hello spaceboy) . But the song that dragged me into this album was it's haert, The hearts filthy lesson, that was pure art!

Then onto Earthling, another "concept" album based losely on aliens coming here to take over and humanity's stand against them. Loved the 2nd single Little Wonder (still hoping the 20 minute version will be released). Seven years in Tibet was a stunner a bit disappointed by Telling lies... All in all a very good album...

But I have to pick one

My vote goes to
1. Outside, it just gets under my skin more



Versus

Definitely 1.Outside, it's just waaaay better, IMO. I think this is an easy choice, no one will prefer Earthling... I guess.

it's kind of a case of apples and oranges, other than the fact that it's the same artist, and more or less the same backing band. i think of 'outside' as more of a conceptual piece with roots in his late '70s 'berlin' albums, and i think of 'earthling' as a kind of fun reaction to the jungle/drum'n'bass craze that was happening at the time, with some leftovers from 'outside' thrown in. i love them both, but i think 'outside' is richer and has more range.

I preferred Earthling until about a year ago.
