I guess the label "Latino" would be the lesser of two evils...but I would rather be referred to a "Boriqua" even more so the Puerto Rican.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the heads up. Are you well-versed on the whole Boriqua issue? If so, would Cubans fall under that term as well? ould you tell me all who falls under the umbrella of Boriqua or is it just Ricans?

Boriqua is a word derived from Borinquen which is what Puerto Rico was called by it's indiginous inhabitants the Taino Indians...it's inherent meaning "home of the brave Lord" so in answer to your question No Cubans, and Dominicans would not be considered Boriqua's,however on a broader sense we are all considered Caribeños because we are so called Latino's of the Carribean region of course, with many of us being racially diverse in our own genetic make-up. Boriqua is word that has become a word of solidarity, cultural pride and cultural identification for all Puerto Ricans regardless of our color and race.

Music is color blind to me. In the words of the late great Blues man John Lee Hooker, " When you close your eyes while listening to the music, what do you see? But I will throw out some names who I like. Dave Matthews, John Mellencamp, Sting, Peter Gabriel, John Mayer, Teena Marie, Alanis Morrisette(The Angry Alanis, not the Artsy Fartsy one) Joss Stone. Jamie Collum, Johnny Cash(Okay, now I'm afraid my ghetto pass is about to be revoked)Jon B. The ones I don't care for. Vanilla Ice, Limp Bizquik, Sonny, of Sonny and Cher(His singing makes me want to get even) and any Country Western artist who Yodels. That is the most Gawd awful sound ever.

notice...I said to describe race...not nationality. Difference.

Black doesn't describe race, negroid does. So the most accurate would be Negro just like caucasian comes from caucasoid. Asians don't call themselves yellow, Native Americans don't call themselves red, people from the middle east don't don't call themselves maze or whatever color that would classify them

If anything I am an American African -- and American of African descent. American first, african second. I would say the same for my people in other countries, their country first, descent second

Of course the term is negroid. eek I'm really a bright person...lol...for real. I dont think you even really addressed the issue I was speaking of either. You and crucial can all yourselves african-american, american-african or whatever...but at the end of the day....it still really speaks of nationality and descent and not necessarily race. We are still talking about two different issues. And Irish American isn't going to argue that he/she still isn't white. But because we want the term 'african american' to describe a race of a ppl living in america, I'm just saying, its not accurate. Just my little ole opinion.

once again.....

I was saying that I don't think the term accurately describes the make up of black ppl living in america. Its a different conversation to speak on how you want to be connected to your descent.

Hell, I don't mind Negro. Its accurate. A Negro who lives in america. wink

[quote]Interesting topic, glad you brought it up. It's not so much being a "white" artist that's good. To me personally, if you're good and honest or interesting in what you're doing you're good period.

John Mayer
Radio Head
Led Zepplin

I don't think about my music collection in terms of great black or great white music. If it sounds good to me, that's all that matters. I did get some grief in middle and high school because I didn't hang out with all black cliques, and it was pretty well known at the time that I was into Duran Duran. I just happened to hang out with a diverse group in school, and that was what they listened to. If they really gave a darn about me and what I listened to, then would have found out that my foundation was in R&B, disco, and funk.

I love going to pop/rock and do the African American count of attendance. Yes it's small, but sometimes you get surprised.

Fave artists: Duran Duran, Bobby Caldwell, The Art of Noise, Coldplay, Third Eye Blind, Madonna, Nikka Costa, Audioslave, Hall & Oates, U2, Maroon 5, Teena Marie, The Police, Sting (solo), Billy Idol, The Beatles, The Doors, The Clash, Tommy James & the Shondells, The Monkees (I loved the tv show, and their music was infectious razz), Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Alanis Morrisette, Fiona Apple.

The only ones who really annoy me or that I don't get are Britney, and EMO music, and I can't get into hard core heavy metal, and I don't listen to country much.

if you are black or african american or whatever term you want to you, you can only like artist that have the same or similar skin color?

Is Gloria Estefan white or black?

its kinda limiting to only fit in a box don't you think?

since i'm of Irish and German descent should i only listen to people of European decent?

Would I have to throw out my Gloria Estefan?

should i quit the org because it is a fansite for an artist who isn't of my same skin tone?

but what about the issue where most african/black americans aren't 100% of African decent?

OMG!! I'm so confused.

What about Native American artists? I'm 1/32 Cherokee, i have the paperwork to prove it and my grandfather was a a member of the CHerokee nation, is that enough of a heritage to ok my owning Native American Music or do i throw that out?

I go to a lot of rock shows every year and usually I don't really notice how many other Black people are in attendance--there are always at least a few other brothas and sistas at every show. However, last week I went to see Regina Spektor perform at Irving Plaza which holds about 1000 people. She's a young Russian-Jewish pianist that grew up in the Bronx. I casually looked around during the show to get a look at the crowd and could only find one other Black person there. That was the only concert where I really noticed the lack of color in the audience. Aren't African Americans into Russian-Jewish pianists? lol

Definitely Russian (don't know about Jewish) Jazz pianist that can play his ass off.
Ably assisted on this release by pros like Hubert Laws (flute), Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) & Pete Christlieb (sax).

This is an unfair poll since black fans of Prince are a bit more open minded musically then your average music fan, of any color. I'd say most blacks like black artists. Complex reasons for this, from the hipness factor, to the groove element or the idea that listening to white music makes you a sell out, in some ways.

But as I said, Prince fans of all colors are a bit more open to all forms of music.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

yeah..but i still say that when it comes to race and/or nationality, let each individual claim what they want.....

heck, if someone wants and feels they are martian....let that martian reign!!!

Yep, I guess that's all we can do since people can identify themselves all sorts of different ways. My Mom gave birth to me in America but if she'd birthed me in Japan or Siberia or Bucharest I'd still be black. By the same token, if I emigrate to Spain tomorrow, I'll still be.....Black.

You could call me African American, Black, Negro, or person of color. As long as it's not something derogatory it's fine by me.

the question is "white artist" not the style of music, thus she falls under as a white artist (doesn't matter if most of her fans are black)
