True.

But the P-Funk thing alone gives you no clue as to what this cat is capable of.
We're talkin' Cobham-capable.

ThreadBare

Couple of years ago, walking through a Baltimore Blockbuster, I heard this tight POCKET of a jam playing over the TV/P.A. system.

"I know that song," I thought, "What is it?"

Turned out it was someone playing a cover of Sly's "In Time." And, they were killing it -- especially the drummer.

So, I stood there, funk junky that I am, waiting for the credit to flash on the screen. Dozens of Blockbuster shoppers are milling around me, browsing games and movies. I'm standing there, looking up at the TV with my mouth practically open, listening to the song, bobbin my head.

When I found out it was Dennis Chambers' "Outbreak" album, I went on my merry little way.

About a week later, I was chillin' at my neighbor's apartment, and he was showing off his ridiculously extravagant flat-screen TV and his cable hookup that played jazz stations.

He flips to one and it's playing D.C.'s "In Time" again. My boy gets ready to change the channel, when...

"Hold it! Don't touch that dial!!! Let this finish. I gotta get this album..."

Didn't get it until a month or so later, when the woman I was dating at the time ordered it for me.

I've spun that disc something crazy. The one flaw on it is John Scofield, whose guitar playing to me has always been too cartoony, not tight enough.

The horns are killin', though. Oh my gosh. Gotta listen to this bad boy again!!!

Yeah, Dennis Is a Bad MF!! From P-Funk to John Scofield, Steely Dan, to Niacin and Steve Howe etc., (not to mention his own albums), he is the ultimate drummer!!

There'a a Tom Coster album called From the Street featuring Dennis on drums and Sheila E. on percussion, and it 's no holds barred , balls to the wall fusion, with Dennis and Sheila taking it higher each time out---I bet they needed fire extinguishers during this session, lol

I did, however, just once, see Dennis actually screw up a drum solo, (What!???!)--he was with Steely Dan at Merriweather Post Pavillion, back in '95....he actually messed up the drum solo on Aja!! My friends and I looked at each other like, whoah, is that possible? No, Not DC, not on AJA!! But that just showed that anybody can have an off night, even superhuman drummers...

Phenomenal drummer. A huge inspiration to drummers worldwide.

His website has a few cool videos www.dennischambers.com
There are a few more on www.drummerworld.com
It`s just as great to see him play, as to hear him play.

I am going to listen to "(not so) Knee deep" by Parliament Funkadelic now.

I am glad you said that! smile

Did you know that Dennis Chambers has said that his playing is directly influenced by a combination of Cobham & Buddy Rich?

There are stories of Dennis watching Buddy as a kid and soaking up everything that he was doing!

The most amazing part about Dennis to me is that he has NEVER had a formal lesson!!
