INXS was a New Wave band first and foremost, Goddammit! OK, so now we all know INXS as a funky Alternative/Dance/Rock act. That's pretty much what gave them their mainstream success. But I think many have lost sight of that fact that INXS began as a quirky Aussie New Wave band. And I shall stress that fact relentlessly (probably because I'm bored). They made some awesome gems in their early days as a hard-working act in their native Perth. Or was it Melbourne? Anyone curious to know what they sounded like in the beginning should get their first 3 albums:
Their music was a cool mix of New Wave, Stones-y Rock, Synth-Pop, Post-Punk, and even a bit of Ska (especially on the first album). In fact, you'll save money by getting their recent compilation CD with their first 2 albums and soe live and B-side shit too. It's called "Stay Young: The Deluxe Years 1979-1982" In fact, it's worht it for Andrew Farriss's keyboard playing alone. He's a totally underrated New Wave keyboradist. I hope whoever wins this contest for new lead vocalist will honor their old school stuff as well as their new stuff. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE. | |
