Parliament - Funked up The best of Parliament. Single Cd but all remastered. Great primer.
Parliament - Tear the Roof Off 1974-1980. Great 2-CD overview. Pretty much the same as Funked UP but with more cuts and a couple 12' versions.
Funkadelic - Music for my Mother. Collection of early Funkadelic singles and rarities up to 1976. If you want to know what most (including myself) consider the essence of true funk, get this. Beware, it aint pretty but it is beautiful.
Funkadelic - The Whole Funk & Nothing but the Funk 1976-1981. This compiles material from 76-81 when Funkadelic became more dance less rock driven but there's classics on it as well.
Check em out and if you like em then check out their full length cds. There's a lot to choose from but may be hard to find except on-line.

The remastered versions have a better sounding bass than the non-remastered CD transfers, and it really adds to the experience.

Parliament:

If you are on a straightforward budget or if you're looking for a great starting point, dish out $20 something bucks and buy the 2-CD compilation, Tear The Roof Off 1974-1980. I heard this whole thing over the summer, and it's like the perfect sampler of all the stuff they did back in the ole days with a good, yet skimpy booklet. You're getting the best of both worlds. BUY IT NOW!

The next ones, which are just acclaimed by all funkateers old and new are: Mothership Connection, Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome, and my most favorite, Motor Booty Affair.

Funkadelic:

There is a compilation called Music For Your Mother, which is a nice overview of every single they released on Westbound from 1968-76, but what sucks is that those unforgettable epic jams are edited, but I wouldn't know anything about that because I only have 3 of their albums and it includes this one.

Now buy ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE and MAGGOT BRAIN.....don't ask me why, just buy and listen.

Bootsy:

If you are looking for a great starting point, buy the anthology Glory B Da Funks On Me: The Bootsy Collins Anthology. Two CD's full of sweaty, space funk, great sound, entertaining booklet, and some fun packaging-who can actually beat that???

Then buy his masterpiece, Ahh...The Name Is Bootsy Baby! because all the tracks on that album is timeless, probably except Rubber Duckie- whatever that disco junk is!

Next, buy Bootsy? Player of the Year and try to find a copy of Stretchin' Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band.....

Westbound released a 2CD best of last year Motor City Madness which covered Funkadelics output between 1969-1976 and it's the perfect introduction to their music of this period. Buy that and if you like them get all their studio albums from the same era. If you don't then you'll never dig them.

Parliament's first album Osmium is great. I think it's now available as a disc called Early Years, with bonus tracks. kind of confusing but it's a teriffic album. Not anything like the '74-'80 Parliament, much more like Funkadelic. They basically try everything on Osmium. There's a country song and even bagpipes! What more could a person want?
