Is Jamiroquai a BAND? or Jay Kay...

In spirit. I would say...Jay Kay is the band master and muse. The driving force. Am I wrong?

Jamiroquai are stuck in the 70's. White-boy disco. Not funky or cool. Just ANNOYING!

Jamiroquai are one of the few modern-day bands who are keeping the funk alive. In this era of samples,hip-hop crap, and lame,sex-obsessed R&B,it's refreshing to listen to a band like Jamiroquai. They're playing REAL instruments without guest rappers, gangsta posturing, and other modern trends. In fact, they're totally disregarding today's music scene, utilizing an "old school" approach.Their current single "Seven Days In Sunny June" kills anything that is in the Top 40 right now.

Double nod

I will go so far to say that Jamiroquai has out-funked and out-souled many U.S. acts who seem to believe that 70's soul music was nothing more ballad heavy albums, fender rhodes piano and singing contests.

Damn! You sure are all un-funky. It's not hard to "kill" anything on Top 40. Note he still gets played everywhere, so that makes him a commercial artist. And he's recycling 70s stuff, not using it as a base for his "approach'.

I just wish he'd die already. It's just sad that this music is what we now call "funky". This shit wouldn't fly if it WERE the 70's.

AGAIN - ANOTHER NEW ARTIST WITH NO NEW IDEAS. Being hailed as the saviour of Funk. Shit, I could cover a Brother Johnson song, change some of the words and be the new Jamiroquai. ....nothing but a derivative....

Actually,if Jamiroquai had been around in the 70s,they would be much more successful than they are now.A song like "Canned Heat" would have been a Number One smash in 1978 or 79.A song like "Feels Just Like It Should" would have been a funk smash in 1976.In my opinion,Jamiroquai's music is more soulful and funkier than most current American R&B artists of today (R.Kelly,Usher,etc).If other R&B artists and bands utilized this same approach (REAL instruments....no samples...no guest rappers...and came up with real melodies and chord changes),people wouldn't be bitching that today's R&B is dead!

Exactly. It's astonishing that Jamiroquai (who aren't even from the US) have a better understanding of 70s soul and funk music than most of the current American R&B acts.

What's astonishing is the bullshit you just spun about funk smashes in 1976. Just because someone isn't from the US doesn't mean they can't be innovative musicians. Jamiroquai are not. If they were, they'd probably be taking a disco (not funk - disco) 70's influence and updating the sound to include new ideas (not including current trends) into the music.

First of all,Jamiroquai is not a "new artist".They have been around since 1993.Secondly,who's hailing them as the savior of funk? I simply appreciate their music because they are using an Old School approach. There are no samples in their music,no rappers,no plastic, midtempo R&B/hip-hop bullshit. For the most part, they're completely ignoring current trends.I find that refreshing.

Obviously not that many. That's kinda the whole problem with music today.

At least there's always Radiohead.

Exactly. That's why it puzzles me when people say that Jamiroquai are not innovative. These days,I don't really expect (or require) artists to be innovative. But I do want REAL music without samples and other annoying hip-hop trends.Jamiroquai delivers.

BULLSHIT !!!
jamiroquai have been around over a decade...and when they started they were hailed as one of the few bands keeping it real...they were the figureheads of the acid jazz movement and they made some great albums...check out return of the space cowboy...and emergency on planet earth...both made over 10 years ago...they were major hits mostly in europe but any real funk lovers worldwide know that they are the shit !!! they have kinda fallen off in the last few years because their bassist stuart zender...and keyboardist toby smith have both left the band...if they were still all together they would be on top of the funk scene right now ..making the grooviest jazz funk out!!!

Stuck in the 70s??!!!

I dont think so...influenced by the 70s maybe, but then who isnt influenced by what came before?

What they are stuck in is the 90s - have you never heard of Acid Jazz??? they were pioneers.

Oh yeah, and

It's funny that you mentioned the 70s.Jamiroquai has alot of credibility with R&B artists from that decade. In fact, many 70s funk/soul artists are huge fans/supporters of Jamiroquai.Maurice White of EW&F loves them....Stevie Wonder loves them....Kool and The Gang even recorded a recent song with them (a remake of their 1974 hit "Hollywood Swinging").Roy Ayer's bassist appears on the new Jamiroquai CD.These guys know that Jamiroquai are keeping the funk flame alive.

I´d say, Jamiroquai were a genuine Band from 1993 until around 1996. Then Stuart Zender (the bassist) left. Afterwards they never reached the same band-feeling live. I´ve seen the band live four times 1993-1995 and they were amazing. Then I saw them again in 2001, shortly before original member Toby Smith left, and I was shocked. Jamiroquai had turned into a one-man-Jay-Kay-disco-show and it was one of the worst concerts I have ever seen. I will never go to another Jamiroquai-concert.
See the man with the blue guitar, maybe one day he`ll be a star...

Just a reminder...

the new Jamiroquai CD 'Dynamite' will finally be released in the U.S. on Tuesday September 20.It will be a dual disc containing bonus videos and other goodies. The CD also includes the track "Time Won't Wait" which wasn't available on some of the import CDs from other countries. The artwork is different than the import version, which featured a boring black-and-white shot of Jay Kay.This is how the U.S. version looks:

Also...be sure to look for the maxi-single of "Seven Days In Sunny June".I ordered it directly from the official site, and they also sent me a free poster with my order. The remixes are excellent.
