Who the hell are Sparks?

I just randomly picked up this album "music that you can dance to" from a car boot sale.

Its odd. HUGE 80's, slick as fuck sound, but with clever lyrics.

The title track and changes are cool. But so very 80's.

As they seem to be american, anyone know who they are?

Oh, well worst= best when it comes to any music critics and me.

It sounds like depeche mode or pet shop boys somewhat. But with huge as fuck keyboards.

"Music That You Can Dance To" was the first Sparks song I ever heard back in 1986. It was a top ten U.S. dance hit that year. They never had any success on the Hot 100 though. Their duet with The Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin "Cool Places" was I think their biggest hit and it didn't even make top 40.

Cool.

Thats a good song. It has dated so badly though. Lyrically, its pretty underground. In other words, not commerical. Though the hook is catchy.

Sparks is one of the greatest bands of all time.

Kimono My House and Angst in My Pants are two of my favorite records ever.

mostly everything off of Kimono is incendiary like that. I didn't know that was covered by the Darkness, FNM did two tracks with them and did covers of the old stuff as well.

They released an album last year called L'il Beethoven that had the most amazing reviews of their career. Universally lauded by everybody. Its fantastic, weird and unmissable. Buy it.

I saw them perform it twice at the Royal Festival Hall - what a night!

The first time I heard that song was when the Banshees covered it for their 1987 album 'Through The Looking Glass'.

Sparks... ain't that the group with the static keyboard that looks a li'l confused?

Wasn't Dr. Fink partially-based on this character along with some other Paul McCartney video?

Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

I also like the singles "#1 Song In Heaven" and "When Do I Get To Sing My Way". The latter used to get played in goth clubs here in NYC a lot (the DJ was a big fan).
