Although my pet peeve is Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas moreso and Hillary Duff.  See Fergie I don't mind. She can be soulful if a little hollery. But as I think long and hard through my musical listening history I fail to find one musician LESS talented then Hillary Duff, who I've dubbed Hillary Fluff for obvious reasons. That she's had a few top 5 albums in her short career almost drives me schizophrenic. All that top money producion wasted behind that blank slate Duff is truly criminal. Now I have to admit to actually liking the new Kanye West album, a lot. It's shockingly good. My nephew bought it and now I play it more then he has. Though I'll still say til the day I die that anyone who samples someone elses tracks should never be dubbed great or a genius or have the word masterpiece associated with them. I don't think any of the songs on this album are what we would consider originl works. The best I can say is that Kanye sure knows WHO to sample. Fergie gets on my last nerve.  I don't think I can even remember/recall any Hillary Duff song, so I can't say how little talent she has. I know who she is though, so I just figured it was a given that she's total crap.
As for Kanye, I haven't heard that either, and I don't plan to. But then, I'm forever stuck in the 60s and 70s, so that should come as no surprise that I'm reluctant to listen to anything commercial from nowdays. The thing is: stupid people always have a lousy taste in music, and if the ten years I've used the internet is anything to go by, it also happens to be the case that stupid people start the most threads on discussion forums. Negativland! There's a name I haven't heard in a while... As for the topic of this thread: When I was younger, I used to be very concerned about how hip a musical artist was. Now that I'm older, I don't give a toss; if I like it, I like it. Commercial-schommercial. At the end of the day, everyone gets into the music game for the same reasons: to make money and get laid. If music speaks to you, why should you care if it's "commercial"? - it's all commercial. Even Joe Strummer ended-up selling "London Calling" to hawk Jaguars. I think what you're referring to is "mainstream" music and - ya know what? - just because something's popular doesn't necessarily mean it's bad (with the converse obviously true, as well). Some people wear their musical taste as some sort of badge and believe it somehow elevates them above the masses; really, it's just an insecurity. I LOVE Bruce Springsteen and I couldn't care less whether people think that's cool or not - his later music and his live show speak to me and that's all that matters. I remember reading a review of a Don Henley record years back and the writer said, "If you're too cool to be moved by 'The Heart of the Matter', you're too cool." I think that says it all. | |
