to name a few. Maybe that proves your point. I've started threads about bands that no one knows...and those sink like the Titanic.

Not like those artists are the biggest blockbusters out there though. And, they're good. So let's keep talking about 'em.

But "commercial" doesn't always equal "subpar."

Sometimes people just name-drop "indie"/"non-commercial" bands to show how cool they are, much like movie critics praise films that don't even play in the markets for which they write.

Stevie, Sly, Jimi, Miles, Prince, etc. were/are "commercially successful" artists. That doesn't make them "subpar" artists. Same goes for many contemporary acts like Beck, Me'Shell, Jill Scott, you name it. Some, like Donna Summer, may not be Ella Fitzgerald, but they make music people enjoy for fun or sentimental reasons.

Sure, there are a lot of good underground acts out there, some of which were commercially successful at one time, but I see plenty of talk about them here, often in the context of threads about "commercial" artists.

Many of the threads about "commercial" artists here are designed to trash them. So that says what?

Donna Summer rocks1

Now of days, Donna is far from commerical. I know what you mean, though. Prince might pride himself and being indie and bouncing on major labels when he feels the need to, but he is still a major pop artist so I'm not surprised that most people like "commerical" aritsts on here. In fact, I'm always surprised when I see names I hardly recognize as some of the topics here.

I've actually been surprised by the depth of knowledge on the org if you fish a little. My tastes range from pop to contemporary avant-garde, dissonant, 12-tone classical music. I am actually more involved in experimental, underground movements so don't make assumptions, please.

The main thing is that you've put the info out there. nod

Very true ~ I read everything people write about jazz and other obscure genres but rarely post becuase I'm learning and don't feel I have a lot to add (yet). But, the information is greatly appreciated and I've made many purchases based on recommendations by orgers. My Dead Can Dance threads never make it past a day but who cares ~ maybe someone will give a listen just because something struck a chord. I think people here have wonderfully diverse collections and they are so terrific about sharing information!
