Hey, you. Get me into Bowie. Now.

So the Mistress owns zero David Bowie albums. I started wondering recently why this is the case, and I've decided to start my discovery of this indescribably sexy MF here in my favorite den for music freaks.

So I figure I tell you what I like and you tell me where to start.

Last month there was a screening of Labyrinth at the Brattle Theater. My cousin and I watched this movie obsessively as a 12 year old girls, and we had a kickass time. The songs ("As the World Falls Down"= love) still made me swooooon.

"Young Americans" and "Let's Dance" (the singles) make me weak in the knees. Should I just shut up and grab these two albums?

where the heck are Anx and Gangsta?

They did a good job getting me into Bowie, and would (I'm sure) love to help you!

Then Ziggy, Low & Scary Monsters.

If you don't like those four then:

a) Don't go any further,

b) There's something wrong with you.

The Young Americans album is all the way worth it, not so sure about the Let's Dance album. You seem to have a liking for his "soul" stuff, so I think Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and Station to Station would be just perfect for a start.

I'm happy for this thread. I've loved Bowie for years, even saw him perform once, watched the PBS special and Live By Request and yet I only own Black Tie White Noise, Earthling and The Falcon and the Snowman soundtrack.

I want to get into more but don't know where to begin! So should I try Hunky Dory too?

Really, anything between 1970 - 1980. The man was on fire during those 10 years. wink

Bowie is one of my MAJOR influences as a musician. Mistress, once u get hipped to Bowie, you'll definately hear that in some of the songs u already have of mine.
Essential Bowie:
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust
The Man Who Sold The World
Diamond Dogs
Young Americans
Low
Hunky Dory

If you want to do it in order, I'd say get Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust first and work your way through his 70's work up through Let's Dance in '83. Then get all his stuff from '93 to '03. But if you're a fan of Young Americans and Let's Dance (the funkier stuff), I'd suggest getting those albums, Station To Station and Black Tie/White Noise. Enjoy! biggrin
