I can't put it any better than this person who posted at livenirvana.com :

by all "official accounts," the band split sometime in early March '94.

What would have happened? Is that the ultimate question?

Since you can't "what if," I'll do it anyway.

He would have gone home...if he lived...maybe done one more token rehab. The band would have been sued by all the promoters they turned their backs on, and he would have been pressed by his management to clean up and get back on the road to make up the dates.

That's the biggest "if." If they would have taken him seriously after Rome and gotten him some serious help...help he REALLY didn't want to take...he could have started to clean up a bit. By the mid summer, they could have gone back and finished Europe...then the fall they might have fulfilled the US...but only because they would have been fucked financially.

That would have been it. They would be completely sick of each other by that point, and probably would have gone the way of Alice in Chains. Dave would still do his Foo album, more or less, Krist would have done something (can't say he would be the same, because Kurt's death really changed him). Kurt would have gone back to the junk and overdosed, because no one would have been around at that point to keep his mind in a good spot.

So...they broke up, but if he lived...they would have had to finish some contractual obligations before they were officially dead.

[watch the flames - Tom] Kurt didn't smoke rocks. He used heroin because he had a terrible, terrible back pain caused by spine curvature, and it was inoperable, and heroin was the only painkiller strong enough to dull the pain enough so that he could go out and perform. Unfortunately it's highly addictive. I'm sorry for being so harsh, and this will probably be snipped, but I had to say it.

If kurt didnt die or kill himself (If thats what actually happened). Then nirvana wouldnt be nearly as popular as they are today!

Why?
If the guy used back pains as an excuse to use heroin then to me it seems he already was heavy into crack...

Oxycotin is used for severe back pain or severe pain in general. It is highly addicitive as well. There were and are many pharmaceutical drugs that a person of Kurt's stature and connections could have gotten legally including Methadone. I am not sure what was used back then, but there could have been legal substitutes.

No disrespect to Kurt and Nirvana fans but using heroin for back pain sounds like something an addict would say to justify their addiction. We all know that Kurt was an addict, even as talented as he was.

I appreciate and very much enjoy Nirvana music, but cannot understand how Kurt has been elevated to such a god-like status. I am still confused how Rolling Stone could put Kurt as the #12 greatest guitarist of all time. I mean they put him above Santana, Jeff Beck, Dick Dale, Bo Diddley etc. I think that this is just nonsense!

In my opinion, had Kurt lived, his legacy would not be nearly as important or appreciated as it is now. Yes, he and Nirvana were very important, but the music industry runs in cycles. There have been many other artist/bands that have influenced the direction of the industry being in the right place at the right time or just striking a nerve with the public. Kurt was just a tragic figure.

Having dropped my .02, I got to see Grohl and the Foos Saturday here in Florida! I was on the center floor about 8 people deep and they rocked so hard that it made my 35 (almost 36) year old ass feel like 15 again! I dig me some FOOS!!

His legacy wouldn't have been that great, he could have ended up like Dave Grohl, old rocker who won't quit or he would have ended up been where ..what's his name lead singer of BABYSHAMBLES? teen heart throb with mediocre ego band and supermodel girlfriend
