He is of this time in that he's still actively making music. He may not be of the current generation but he's still of our time. Besides, we've hardly been talking about prince in this discussion. I mean c'mon dude, I'm not accusing you of being a racist and perhaps you came across differently than you intended when you said what you did but saying something like "lack of talent killed the black guitar player" is A.a HUGE unsupportable generalization and B.is just wrong when there ARE talented black guitar players out there and still working (many of whom have posted on this very thread). It's a pretty well documented fact that the corporate music industry has had a huge impact on what genres certain people "belong" to and don't really promote black music unless it's part of a trend that they can control e.g. hip-hop. Once again, look at all the great guitar players of funk-rock that most white rock fans probably have never heard of like Eddie Hazel, or the black hard rock bands that got overshadowed by their white counterparts like Living Colour, or the blues masters where all the pioneers of rock lead guitar as we know it learned everything they know, or jazz guitarists that are unheard of because jazz is no longer part of mainstream popular music.

Again lack of talent killed the black guitar player

Eddie Hazel is dead.
Living Colour was average.
Those blues masters are dead.

Im just tired of people always blaming others.

Lack of new talent killed the black guitar solo.

Then your tired of living in the real fucking world.

The music industry dictates what is going to be heard. Could be loads of talented black players alive and well that are not going to get record deals or if the do get a record deal. They will not radio airplay because the industry has pretty much done away with guitar laden music.

Seriously, that shit is changing right now, as we speak. In the words of Mighty Mouse "Here I come to save the day!".

If it's good it will be heard.
There are too many venues for music, actually too damn many.
Go right ahead blame the music industry, lol.

Blame the guitar strings.
Blame the guitar makers.
Blame George Bush, because "he don't like black people."
Blame mixers.
Blame computers.

Lack of talent is the cause.

I would be the one boardie who almost agrees with Dax.

While I don't believe that a lack of talent in the Black population is the sole culprit for the dearth of black guitar solos or black rock musicians for that matter, there is a lack of something that is easily culpable, when it comes to black guitarists.....

A lack of interest and a lack of proper musical education, maybe?

First of all, the glory of the guitar has been replaced by samplers and music editing software. Whereas musicians used to be "tight" on an instrument you now have bedroom producers who are now just "tight" on Pro Tools or some sort of sequencer/keyboard. Second of all, no one practices an instrument anymore. The talent that does exist in alot of black musicians today is not placed under a strict hand of discipline or musical apprenticeship. My mom busted my ass along with my brothers if we DIDNT practice the piano for at least an hour a day. Maybe someone could throw in some talk concerning the lack of funds of public music education.

Today, I've friends, although talented, never studied music nor were mentored and it shows. A few of them are naturally gifted musicians but could care less for the guitar or any other instrument save the keyboard, Cubase and Reason.

So in a roundabout way, I kinda agree with Dax. There is, I think, a lack of talented black rock musicians/guitarists. But the reason for this is that they're all in R&B or hip hop!

As I stated before, I've found out that most of the talented musicians I've come across lately, guitar and otherwise, are playing in church. A lot of these cats are funk/jazz musicians by choice, but play church gigs out of necessity, 'cause they pay the most. They're out there, but a lot of 'em just aren't playing r&b. Most of the these are cats my age, though, so the younger generation needs to step it up...

Oh, most certainly Jesse.

My brother plays in a church, is unsigned, yet may be one of the most formidable and talented natural (musician for that matter) guitarist I've heard. Yeah, I should've added "church" to my list of where our talented musicians can be found lurking.

If Pharrell studied guitar rather than beats, we wouldn't be having this conversation, dontcha think?

Y'know, I've always wondered about a lot of these 'super producers' - do any of them (Dr. Dre, Missy, the guy who did that Amerie "one thing" song, the neptunes) play instruments well enough to play in a group. Or can they play at all?

Teddy Riley could play and I saw Pharrel play drums (nothin' flashy)with that all-star group at the grammys (featuring my man Vince Gill) but that's about it.
