the first JC stuff i really got into were the themed "god/love/murder" compilation CDs - you can usually find all three in a box set for cheap. they're a pretty good overview of his music, and you get some cool liner note essays from the likes of bono, quentin tarantino and june carter cash.
there was a 4th posthumous edition to these CDs called "life" which i also highly recommend. by the way - the songs on all four CDs were personally chosen by johnny cash, so these are the real deal - not a cheesy knock-off moneymaker.

God/Love/Murder (plus Life) would be good.
or the 3-CD version of "The Essential Johnny Cash" would be great (the more common 2-CD won't do you wrong either, though). there's actually a new box set out this year that i'm thinking of picking up. Johnny Cash: The Legend. "I don't need your forgiveness, cos I've been saved by Jesus, so fuck you."

you definitly should get
live at san quentin live at folsom prison after that, ragged old flag, bitter tears, the highwaymen and the 'sun' compilation are quite essential. Everything from the 'american recordings' series goes without saying. It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

and check out his cover of Hurt by NIN.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

Huge Cash fan here. You should start with the following which make a good variation
1. Sun Material - He made around 65 tracks for the label and they're all worth it. Find a list of them all and download them. You can get them all on box sets but they cost a bit. 2. San Quentin - Folsom is great but San Quentin is amazing then get Folsom 3. Unchained - His second American album. Has Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers as his backing band. It rocks. 4. Blood Sweat And Tears - Maybe his best concept album. 5. Rockabilly Blues - A great rock n roll album from 1980 underrated. [Edited 8/31/05 8:39am]

Love God Murder (Compilation) The final four "American" albums. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Which is on number four (? picked this offa Amazon)) of his American Recordings... I thought there were only three.. [Edited 8/29/05 1:31am] It is on the fourth. Here are the four American albums: American Recordings (2002) Unchained (2002) American III: Solitary Man (2002) American IV: The Man Comes Around (2003) A fifth American album was in the work when he died, and may be released in the near-future. He also did an album of gospel tunes during this time period called My Mother's Hymn Book Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones.
