Lennon's "I want You (She's so heavy)"

How great is this song? The whole "Abbey Road" album is great of course, but this is my favorite. Next would be "Come Together", then "Golden Slumber/Carry That Weight/The End". I wonder if Bowie got his ideas for the "Up the Hill Backwards" chorus vocals from "Carry That Weight", they're very similar in arrangement.
BTW, I can so imagine Prince doing "I want you", he'd rock it for sure!

a very crucial song in the Abbey Road sequence. Leading into Here Comes The Sun, the contrast is just magical.

How great is the guitar line that they can just repeat it over & over and it works--kind of like Hey Jude, but much more dark & intense. Wouldn't sound out of place in Beethoven's music. I'm glad I learned where it ends, though, so I'm not shocked by it anymore.

Abbey Road is such a great album. Not their very best collection of songs (though it still has more classics than most artists' most popular albums!), but their most beautiful album from an arrangement/production standpoint. Everything sounds perfect 35 years later.

An amazing song. It's one of my favs on that cd. The entire cd is great. I totally agree with Andyman who says it still sounds perfect 35-40 years later.

Yoko, too, for inspiring it. Not sure I'd want to be in any relationship that inspired that song, though!

Glad to see everyone agreeing! And you're right "Something" is great. They all had an amazing sense for melody.
BTW, I'm not familiar with most of their other stuff, did Ringo Starr also write some tunes?

I see. It said "Starkey" as the composer, so I take it that's his real name? Or a nickname?

interesting notes on She's So Heavy from the Beatles Anomolies website (amazing site!!)

I Want You (She’s So Heavy)

1:55
Loud plink from centre guitar.
2:19
In earlier editions, I wrote here :-
Next to last note of arpeggio is wrong
I’ll modify that, and say that it is strange. It unexpectedly makes an augmented 5th chord. But Jud McCranie says
To me it still sounds like he missed the string and didn't play what he intended. It is different from the other times.
2:21
George audibly flicks his pick up selector to change the tone of the guitar.
3:08
Pickup click again, and some stray guitar notes.
3:37
Fluffed bass note.
3:40,3:42
(Center) click/edit/crackle in guitar channel, and then John’s pickup clicks.
4:28
Distortion in John’s "Yeeah" ... prompting someone (rumoured as in the control room) to yell at him (4:32). Sounds like Paul’s voice to me, and Michael Bain/Laurent Cerveau agreed on this.
4:32
Left channel, shout, something like "Turn it down man/Mal" or "Bloody loudmouth!"
4:34
Faint "Yeaah" scream. (couldn’t be print-through, it’s too far away from 4:28)
Latest thinking from JWB
That's incorrect. That's an urban legend about the song.
Nobody was yelling at John. (There is no reason anybody would DARE!) Someone was just yelling in approval or excitement. It certainly doesn't come from the control room, control rooms are sound-proofed from the rest of the studio. That's why they use talkback intercoms. It's one of the other Beatles shouting during the performance.
It definitely isn't "mal" at least. Mal wouldn't be in charge of turning ANYTHING down.
Even though he's not always right, Lewisohn says:
"Close scrutiny of the original Trident tapes reveals the indecipherable shout to belong to a fellow Beatle, off-microphone, taped on 22 February, and that it was certainly not one of disapproval."
Yelling "turn that down" off-mic in the center of a studio while a song is being played is not an efficient way of letting the engineer know that you want something turned down, nor is that something a Beatle would do anyway. And after all....the engineers can only hear the shout as well as we can. They're soundproofed from the rest of the studio. They don't hear the studio sound. They hear what's going onto the tape.
So after assessing the facts, I have concluded without a shadow of a doubt that:
The shout is made by another Beatle in the studio. (I can't tell which one. It sounds like Ringo to me but it would be louder if it was him. It's probably Paul.)
The shout was just an "I'm excited about that scream in this rocking song" noise. (Paul is quite prone to those.) They DEFINITELY aren't saying "turn that down". It doesn't sound like that to me, and it isn't logical either. That rumor was started by someone who probably doesn't know a whole lot about studios or how the Beatles recorded.

I'd say along with Helter Skelter, this was probably the heaviest the Beatles ever go. thumbs up! Love it to death, but it's not even in my top half songs on Abbey Road.

I also dig how it abruptly ends to dead silence... D'angelo and Prince has used that method a time or two in their day.

The Beatles were not the "grooviest" band, but they nailed it on that song (particularly the bass, as mentioned, but the guitar too) as well as on Come Together.

The rest of John's songs on that album aren't my favorites--Sun King, Mustard, Pam, Because is pretty good--but Come Together & She's So Heavy are worth the price of a cd.

Abbey Road has one of my favorite Paul songs--You Never Give Me Your Money.

Great song. One of my fave Beatles cuts. The guitar during the chorus is killin'. The melodic chords that goes right into the riff is hittin'.

I want You (She's so heavy) is probably one of their more intense and freakin' rocking songs just for those rocking guitar arrangements. The only thing that really scares me about this song is the ending when everything comes at a halt. I really think Lennon wrote it for Yoko Ono, though.

Helter Skelter scares the heck out of me too, because Paul or Lennon screams out, "I have blisters all over my hands". That song also inspired Paul Manson, and that's why it so mythical to me.

Hmmm I believe it was Ringo who said the blister comment.

also, I remember hearing the Manson comments, didn't he say he heard voices?

Well.. he possibly did.. with the quality now on CD.. you actually can hear voices scratchin around all over that song.

Amazing...
