What songs would go on a Hurricane Katrina disc? Maybe this is just a form of catharsis - forgive me if it sounds crass.
I keep hearing songs, or finding myself singing songs, and realizing how much they apply to the current situation. So I'm thinking of burning a CD, but I'd like some other thoughts. Here's what I have now: Here Comes The Flood - Peter Gabriel (from Shaking The Tree) Broken Hearted - Eric Clapton (from Pilgrim, although the version he and John Mayer played on CNN a few days ago would be preferable) Take Me To The Mardi-Gras - Paul Simon (from Here Comes Rhymin' Simon) You Will Be Moved - Mavis Staples (from The Voice) Deep Water - Seal (from Seal 1991) Drowning Man - U2 (from War) Bridge Over Troubled Waters - Simon & Garfunkel (from BOTW) S.S.T. - Prince (from NPGMC) Any other thoughts? (And, in case you think this is somehow a substitute for donating, I have already given more than I can really afford, but I trust that my finances will all work out).

I've been thinking about this too. Last December would surely need to be on there! Music is the language of the spirit. It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife. --Kahlil Gibran

I haven't heard some of these tracks, but I have a feeling they're not all entirely serious. I'm hoping this can stay a respectful thread, and not just a list of songs mentioning hurricanes or floods.

"And Dream of Sheep"
(Hounds of Love) Written by Kate Bush Little light shining, Little light will guide them to me. My face is all lit up, My face is all lit up. If they find me racing white horses, They'll not take me for a buoy. Let me be weak, Let me sleep And dream of sheep. "Attention shipping information in sea areas...Bell Rock, Tiree, Cromaty, gale east...Malin, Sellafield..." "Come here with me now." Oh, I'll wake up To any sound of engines, Ev'ry gull a seeking craft. I can't keep my eyes open-- Wish I had my radio. I tune in to some friendly voices Talking 'bout stupid things. I can't be left to my imagination. Let me be weak, Let me sleep And dream of sheep. Ooh, their breath is warm And they smell like sleep, And they say they take me home. Like poppies heavy with seed They take me deeper and deeper.

R.E.M - The Final Straw
As I raise my head to broadcast my objection As your latest triumph draws the final straw Who died and lifted you up to perfection? And what silenced me is written into law. I can't believe where circumstance has thrown me And I turn my head away If I look I'm not sure that I could face you. Not again. Not today. Not today. If hatred makes a play on me tomorrow And forgiveness takes a back seat to revenge There's a hurt down deep that has not been corrected There's a voice in me that says you will not win. And if I ignore the voice inside, Raise a half glass to my home. But it's there that I am most afraid, And forgetting doesn't hold. It doesn't hold. Now I don't believe and I never did That two wrongs make a right. If the world were filled with the likes of you Then I'm putting up a fight. Putting up a fight. Putting up a fight. Make it right. Make it right. Now love cannot be called into question. Forgiveness is the only hope I hold. And love... love will be my strongest weapon. I do believe that I am not alone. For this fear will not destroy me. And the tears that have been shed It's knowing now where I am weakest And the voice in my head. In my head. Then I raise my voice up higher And I look you in the eye And I offer love with one condition. With conviction, tell me why. Tell me why. Tell me why. Look me in the eye. Tell me why. [Edited 9/7/05 14:18pm] where the sun dont ever shine i will shiver the whole night through

louisiana 1927 by randy newman
What has happened down here is the wind have changed Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain Rained real hard and rained for a real long time Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline The river rose all day The river rose all night Some people got lost in the flood Some people got away alright The river have busted through cleard down to Plaquemines Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline CHORUS Louisiana, Louisiana They're tyrin' to wash us away They're tryin' to wash us away Louisiana, Louisiana They're tryin' to wash us away They're tryin' to wash us away President Coolidge came down in a railroad train With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has done To this poor crackers land." CHORUS you look better on your facebook page than you do in person
