i used to think that, too...but it really isn't. it's just not as immediate as some of his other '70s output.

oh, and i think you're forgetting about 'pin-ups'. razz

Have you had a breakthrough with it lately?

yeah...i think seeing some live footage and talk show footage from around that time really put the album into perspective for me, and it showed me how traces of that album's style is present on lots of his subsequent albums. i still think it sounds a bit samey, but now i think that's a good thing.

and whatever - i hope bowie and/or EMI/virgin exploits the living daylights out of his back catalog - it can be annoying to see a new "greatest hits" every two years, but the up side of it all is that i don't have to buy them. meanwhile, if some new, spiffy reissue of "low" is gonna someday entice a kid to buy it and get into bowie, then great. i'm all for it.

Yeah. And it gives my completist ass a new edit or two every couple years to drool over for my own compilations. thumbs up!

It's an album. It's from the 70's. I can kinda see what you're getting at though. It is his least edgy, most mainstream album from that entire time. But what it lacks in avant garde-ness, it makes up for in warmth, tunefulness and fucking fantastic singing.

Young Americans that is...

it's really the first time people saw bowie as a style icon, or as being capable of coming off smooth and elegant instead of completely bizarre (not that there's anything wrong with that).

I'd say that album and Low were the most shocking and important shifts in style/music of his entire career.
