Z Cult Favorite- "WildFire"/Michael Murphy/"Shannon" Henry Gross/ "Brandy" The O'Jays

Hey ya'll, remember these songs about animals? The O'Jays had a cut from 78 about a dog named "Brandy". My mom had the album and I used to think it was about a woman, untill I heard on the radio it was about a dog! Hey, that didn't blow my mind, cuz I had to 45 singles of two more songs that I ADORED to death when I was little; "Wildfire" by Michael Murphy from 75 and "Shannon" by Henry Gross from 76. I STILL love these two songs, especially "Wildfire". That song was about a horse and "Shannon" was not only about a dog, but a dog that had ran away and drowned in the ocean! That song was a fairly big hit, going to #6 on the charts. Anyway, who else out there digs these songs about 2 dogs and a horse?

I was listening to Brandy a few years ago and only did it occur to me that he was singing about a damn dog. disbelief

Still one of my favorite songs, though. hug

so what was the real deal on this? everyone always said Brandy was a dog, but did anyone ever ask the O'Jays about this? the lyrics are vague enough that it could definitely go either way....

and I always thought "Wildfire" was pretty spooky.... the woman dies, the horse takes off, and now there's a "Hoot-Owl" by the narrator's window, for "six nights in a row", then he says:
"She's coming for me, I know,
and on wildfire we're both gonna go..."

eek eek

Yeah, that kinda weirded me out a bit....

Those lyrics are killin' though! But yeah, I used to hear "Wildfire" on the radio when I was real little. It was kinda spooky, but spooky in a cool way. The vibe of that song, just can't explain it. I loved that song so much. About a few days after hearing it on the radio, I got the 45, which I STILL have. That's one of my all-time favorite songs by anyone, ever.

Good to see ya back, Brutha B. All of these tunes were great but my fave is "Brandy" by the O'Jays. I just heard this song the other day on the ol' soul classics. I told my dad that this tune was about a dog and he was like; "Man Eddie Levert had us all fooled"...He wore the 8-track out to DEATH..had to get him the vinyl for Xmas back in 78 after the tape died.. (lol)..good pick!

I've been here, bro. I was wondering where you've been? Go on over to Music and More and jump in on my thread about Bebe Buell and Little Red Corvette.

Same here BG. Shit, you got to love the 70's. One of the few decades where you could write a song about a dog and still that sound cool .

I was in love when they put her down on my doorstep in the rain...
But how could I know that she would just up and go?
My best friend's gone and I'm so all alone

hmmm I'd say those lyrics are definitely about a dog.

eye heart the 70s!

I once got a spam e-mail that offered 7 discs of 70s greatest rock hits for like, $20... I sent away for it and got it - totally a bootleg deal, but it was full of amazing stuff...
