Selling Out or Maintaing Artistic Integrity...your opinions on this Vanessa Carlton - I took an interest in this singer because she opened for Stevie Nicks this summer. After reading this post on her Web site I couldn't help but wonder when some of these artists draw the line between selling out to sell records and maintaining their artistic integrity. This is an example of a singer who gets the shaft b/c her sophomore album doesn't match up tot he success of her first. Now she says she'll be working with Linda Perry on her third record...while Vanessa claims she's no pop princess, just thinking of how Pink and X-tina used Linda, I can't see how this isn't the first step to selling out to POP bullshit
"so i think it's about time that i address a few issues that are screaming for attention. a) unfortunately, there will be no second single on this album. there are a handful of people at my label that do not see how great the album would do if it was promoted. yes, there are shortsighted (nonmusical bastards) and it sucks, but that's the way it goes. welcome to the music biz. 2!) i worked my ass off promoting harmonium in the ways that i could control, but you can't sell records to someone in the middle of indiana without a little help. (i like indiana). c)the people (you) that have supported this record and love it are my true and ultimate fanbase. don't worrry i will continue churning out the goods no matter how big or small the albums are.4) i'm writing some killer songs for my 3rd album (most people will know it as my second!). and feel that i am about to FINALLY settle down with a group of people that "get" what kind of artist i am. (yes, there will be a lot of changes going on.)no i am not a pop princess (current label doesn't realzie this important tidbit). though i know that everyone reading this knows that, the rest of the world should and will figure it out at some point as well. i'm goin into the studio mid september with linda perry to begin my third album. she friggin rocks my world. does it really matter? if you love the music you'll make it whether people want it or not. Well, one of many sell outs I guess was pop singer tiffany. I like most of her music, but she went all urban (for 1990) on the newjack laced "new inside", getting rid of her proven hit producers and going for a harder edged sound to attract a more hip fanbase. It flopped. so sales wise, if already established its proberly unwise to change direction and go with whatever producer is popular. As it freezes out some of the core audience u have. Having said that, tiffanys "new inside" is my fav album of hers, so there u go. Also, every artist is different and changing direction can be a good thing, so who knows? Selling out should not be a bad thing, if the music is still good | |

I think Linda has a way to go before catching Diane. Diane has written a lot of great songs. (I'm sure Linda's publishing checks are a beautiful sight! Bless her.)
To get back on the subject it's probably a fine line. Even Prince had to remedy the fact that he went over budget on the first CD. In his words he "Wrote a hit album to prove to Warners he was a businessman" (The exact quotes are in the bio. I'm just going by memory.) During the Dirty Mind/Controversy/1999 period I think he had a mixture of "Art" with clever marketing, good songs (hits) and a five year plan. Which concluded with Purple Rain. When he stared trying different stuff after that during the ATWIAD/Parade period people didn't understand. Warner's was kewl until the numbers started dwindling. He again remedied it with D and P but he wanted to release music at his own pace (faster) which Warners didn't go with. [Edited 8/28/05 12:15pm] | |

As for Prince, yeah he has dipped between the deliberately commercial and arty. Before "d and p", "batman" was so deliberatley commericial aswell. "graffiti bridge" was meant to continue where "batman" left off. He tried then current rnb, but for 1990, it sound a little dated. If prince wanted a big selling rnb album (which he obviously did), then he needed some newjack on there too. "new power generation" was meant to be youthful and have cred like "my perogative", but it did sound kinda stale next to then current newjack and hits by teddy riely etc.... | |
