Is Johnny Gill the closest thing to Luther?

I think he is. I can't think of anyone else that can really be compared to him.

Compare Johnny's The Floor to Teddy's Only You.

As for the floor cut, that's a different story altogether b/c this is a uptempo jam. Lurther didn't do much uptempo jams.

From what people say about his personal life.....

He had some very nice songs by Jam and Lewis and Babyface on, was it "Provocative"? The CD with My My My. "Lady DuJuor" and "Just Another Lonely Night" were smooth songs.

I think for Johnny to go in the Luther direction he needs the same people to collaborate with on writing to find his sound and what he wants to say. Luther and Nat and Marcus had a great chemistry. And Luther had such great arranging skills that even with different producers the music would always be good. Luther wasn't going to give you no B.S CD.

He hasn't had a solo album since his teen years and only a few people a familiar with his work with LSG ( Levert, Sweat, Gill ) or even Stacy Latisaw, so it's a bit presumptious to say he's in Luther's league. If he had more songs that were as popular as My, My, My, he could be worthy, but that's just my humble opinion.

Thank you, I'm glad someone mentioned this. What made Luther great was not just his amazing voice, but the guy had serious skills as a writer and arranger.
If somebody wants to be compared to Luther, they gotta bring much more to the table than a vocal tone or range.

The closest voice to Luther is probably Reuben Studdard, followed by Jaheim.

lol You don't really follow Johnny's music, do ya? Dude's pushing 40, and his last solo lp was around the age of 30.

I can't really say I know The floor. Mostly just the stuff from the album with Rub you the right way. Johnny Gill is very talented. I think he's probably underrated. If he did more solo stuff he'd probably be up there in Luther's league.

As for Jaheim, I think is vocal style is more close to Teddy Pendergrass more so than Luther.

True. He's Teddy all day long. Jaheim has a couple of cuts where he sounds Luther-ish though.

..I can't help but agree that Jaheim is very Luther-esque..in terms of sound and even delivery

I love "the floor". One of the last true uptempo rnb tunes. (or newjack)

The video is hot too. Johnny tries dancing again. Its a great video.

I think johnny sounds alot like luther. And johnny does go overboard like luther does too. Which always annoys me.

"rub u the right way" has a great video. Trying to watch johnny dance always makes me laugh.

i liked that song he had way back called "fairweather friend", somehow its very catchy to me. lol But as far as being compared to Luther.... hmmm I don't know, he has THE best voice in NE, but I don't think he has the skills that Luther had, that magic, and that spark you get from listening to one of Luther's songs.... batting eyes
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Yeah I like that song too. It does have a catchy hook.

I thik babyface and la reid did that one.

I love the track "provocative" and the sweet ballad "long way from home", proberly my fav johnny ballad.

If anyones got "new jack city" soundtrack, check out "i'm still waiting", a very poppy, though very well sung, tune. Love it.

I am surprised you don't know about The Floor. Where I'm from shit, this song was like a dance anthem and it even has line dance to accompany it.They even still play it in the clubs today.
