PS what some people don't know is the fact that everythingthat Prince did onthe For u album(play/ record all instruments, write all the songs by himself, and etc..) almost27 years ago .Stevie wonder did the same thing prior to Prince and what makes it more intersting is Stevie is Blind.

GAME OVER...

I love Prince to death, but he's not fucking with Stevie... not in the 70s, not in the 80s... not now.

Stevie Wonder is primarly an accomponist as a keyboard player. Prince is an accomponist as well as a soloist on the keys. I think Stevie is superiour in his use of rich harmonic twists and turns in his compositions, but as pure chops are concerned Prince is the winner imo. Just listen for example to the Madhouse "8" album or watch the piano-medley of the Lovesexy concert, or countless other live performences for that matter. His solo chops are comparable to that of someone like Jan Hammer. I never heard Stevie doing stuff like that (and I have most of his albums).
Also there are numerous tales of serious keyboard players working for Prince running against their own technical limitations when executing some of his keyboard parts. Prince kills on keys (I do think that Stevie Wonder is the superiour musical genious though).

These are good points, however I don't think either of them really do much soloing on their albums, and I think I'm more impressed on by stevie's playing on record on all levels: creativity, style and technique. Prince's live stuff like you've cited, is more impressive, but I haven't seen too much live footage of Stevie especially not from his prime period. However, I've heard several stories from people who've met or worked with stevie that attest that he is a chop God on his instruments, perhaps more than he's recognized for, I've even heard people compare him to Oscar Peterson and Herbie Hancock, who were definitely solo-inclunded keyboardists. Another factor is that Prince is more of a solo-inclined musician in general ie more of a showoff lol.

So was I! lol

BTW, I know Stevie charge Berry Gordy a lot of money twice before so he could stay with Motown.

I wonder how much Stevie will be charging Universal before finally release the new album?

Prince is my favorite musician for a lot of reasons, but there is not one instrument he can play or one thing he can do that someone else can't do better.

His greatest gift is that he can mix it up in so many ways and is such a complete musician, that he can do almost anything he wants.

The average classical musician can play rings around most pop musicians; but being a pop musician is a very different thing. It requires its own masteries.

Prince is a rock / funk / pop god and a master musician.

Stevie Wonder is a prodigy and a national treasure.

For just keyboard skills, the older, more experienced Wonder trumps Prince, but Prince can play the HELL out of the keys.

And he can play guitar with such effin' style, dance backward in heels, command the microphone like he's its lover, conduct a band, and sing into the stratosphere, all at the same time.

Dey both good...

The subject of this thread isn't Prince vs Stevie, it's who is the best keyboard player between both...

As a pianist my self, Prince at keys isn't that great, yes he can play piano (very well), but he's not a master at it, not at all...

He never pushes keyboard playing to another level like Stevie did... or even revolutionized it...

Real musicians know that... wink

So Stevie wins... lol

im curious to hear your take on lisa colemans playing...during one of the largo shows they had a guest pianist jam with her...she let him do all the heavy pounding and she would complete his line with a couple florishes...it was very interesting to see...expecially after reading dr. fink talk about how prince would go to him for powerful solos but would go to lisa for depth.

To make this fair, poke out both Prince's eyes and tell him to write some music. If he can come up with any good stuff after his eyes stop bleedin' then he wins.

Stevie all the way. Prince is very good but it's that old thing about being jack of all trades and masters of none. (don't believe the press releases!)

For example, Prince can play a few instruments up to an relatively high standard, but personallly on any instrument he plays, I wouldn't put him on the same pedestal as a dedicated instrumentalist.

Fair enough, Stevie is a multi-instrumentalist in the fact that he just happens to play Drums and harp, in particular but it is well established that his main foray lies within keys/synth/ebony&ivory.

But if Stevie can mindf*ck Herbie Hancock who himself has immensely complemented Stevie (in partiucular during the "Songs In The Key Of Life" sessions), Stevie must be doin' sumthin' right! nod

I'm just an amateur keyboardist, but I have to say that BlaqueGuitarist's comment seems right on.

It's easy to sight read Prince's keyboard parts, but palying a Stevie song.... he throws some complicatd chord progressions in there.

The thing is, P's "simple" chords actually sound like they are more cmplicated. I'ts not clear how he does it..... part of it is the production, but part is probaby also the voicing.
