That diversity is almost always bound to bring on change. susannah said: What they're doing now, i think, is more a sanding down, if you will, of how they used to be, rather than a growth.
That's one way of looking at it. You might be right. Either way, I think "By The Way" and "Californication" are good albums. I'm a songwriter, so I don't really care if they play like they used to. I just wanna hear some good melodies. They appear to be doing what feels good to them and it rocks my socks when I'm in the gym (rhyme not intended). I totally agree. Its the "cool" thing to dog any of the stuff post BSSM, but I think they've done some great stuff in recent years. One Hot Minute was a bit all over place, but there were some great ideas there. Californication acheived what it set out to do, which was create an album that had the feel of all that is good and bad about that state. By The Way was an incredibly daring album, as they went in a totally different direction than most would have expected. The songs are in a more mellow vibe, with Pet Sounds era Beach Boys as an influence, as well as a touch of post-Revolver Beatles. Personally, I think its great that the guys haven't tried to keep producing the same album over and over. The early stuff is great, but I knew the minute I heard The Uplift Mofo Party Plan that these guys weren't going to be content to stick to one sound forever. Hell yes, I love the Califunkpunkrockinfreakapotamuses! These are the 3 albums that matter the most:
They came to Atlantic City last Sunday, but I missed them! I can't wait for the new stuff though. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I don't think any one of their albums have been flawless. I'd have to pick BSSM as my favorite. But my appreciation hasn't really changed over the years, because I, unlike many music fans, actually appreciate it when bands don't do the same thing year after year.
One Hot Minute is underrated in my opinion. It's their hardest rocking album, and I thought Dave was the perfect choice to keep them going forward. It's the return of Fruciante, as good as he is, that seems to have mellowed them. I was not digging the radio songs from By the Way until I heard the cd. They sound so fresh when you hear them in context & full cd sound (except Zephyr, which I still don't like). The current RHCP are more musical and more mature. Sure, it's fun to see young guys going nuts, but it looks a bit pathetic on old guys. They've allowed themselved to age and even learn & grow. Freaky Style was great when it came out, but listening to it now it seems so one dimensional compared to By the Way. The vocals are the biggest improvement. Listening to Freaky Style I wish George Clinton had just sung the songs. If the new album has one problem, it's that it's too long. Typical flaw of modern cd's. Check this song out at:

The song is called "Under The Bridge", and that song could be found on both of their hits CD's: "What Hits!?" from EMI records which came out in the 90's and the one from Warner Brothers which came out a couple of years ago (which includes a DVD with their videos and live show). I wish I was 17 again. That's when I was OBSESSED with this band. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

I gotta agree with you on Navarro being the key to them moving forward. I have really only heard the singles they've put out since One Hot Minute and I've hated all of them because they sound bored. And Frusciante's playing isn't anywhere as good as it was back in the day. I hate to say it, but he sounded better when he was on the smack!

Yeah, I think this is unfortunately a running theme in the music world! Actually, Frusciante didn't delve into heroin until AFTER he left the Peppers. It was during his years apart from them that he became a junkie. It was an interview that the other guys caught on TV that alerted them to John's using, and prompted them to intervene. At least they didn't release this bland shit of an excuse that Red Hot Chili call music. They didn't care if they were popular or not. Red Hot Chili Peppers these days appeal to people who don't like rock music, they're the kind of band that people who like Beyonce, 50 Cent, listen to. Plus Mike Patton is a genious and superior to Anthony Kiedis in every way, the guy has got one of the best voices out there. Did you know to this very day that Kiedis refuses to play in any festival in which Patton is also taking part in?
