yeah I hear ya. The old stuff might be "too raw" for them. They used to do everything from funk, punk rock, to some outlandish stuff. I liked it when John Frusciante was high on drugs playing those crazy Hendrix/Zappa licks (lol..but it's good he cleaned up his act). "Uplift Mofo Party Plan" from 87 is amazing..total heavy funk rock...definetly the blueprint for bands like Faith No More and the Beasties.

I dig the Chili Peppers. I know a lot of people like to dog the recent stuff, but I'm cool with it and I support them . Change is good. Much of their recent stuff has been pretty homogenic, but I appreciate the fact that they aren't trying to hold on to some caricature of themselves from back in the day.

Some of their earlier songs are good, but now they are too bland and play it safe by releasing samey material. Personally I prefer Faith No More and Jane's Addiction.

yeah they are very samey these days, i agree with you guys, its all the early stuff that was the good stuff, the last album was really really mainstream. it was a huge hit, but i dont think thats good enough for us orgers!

do you not think that what they had wasnt a caricature, it was their own unique raw sound tho? What theyre doing now, i think, is more a sanding down, if you will, of how they used to be, rather than a growth.

God-awful for the most part. They were somewhat listeneable for a minute when Dave Navarro was in the group.

Seriously, I don't consider this group to be of anymore genuine musical importance than Metallica. Kids dig these kind of bands, they always have and always will. That's the type of music that inspired millions of teenagers to start their own bands. I think the guitar shops should pay some sort of compensation money for Metallica and The Red Hot Chili Peppers for basically running the business for the last two decades.

noone said they are of more importance than someone like metallica! Yeah, maybe they should start that! but then both bands make enough money and get enough respect anyway!

I don't personally consider Metallica be of any genuine musical importance, that's what I meant. In the end these two are the two most successful kiddie bands, bands whose t-shirts millions of teens think it's cool to wear from one decade to another.

They were somewhat listeneable for a minute when Dave Navarro was in the group. Seriously, One Hot Minute was their BEST album! They had stumbled on a new sound in rock with Dave Navarro playing guitar and they were on the verge of creating something really classic had Dave stayed. But once Californication dropped, they went to the safe boring pop/rock sound they have now.

kiddie bands?! Indeed. Proper grown-up, mature adults prefer music such as Mental Destruction, M.A. Numminen or nature sound CDs over that stuff.

er, no, actually, proper grown ups dont start arguments on websites.
and they have varied musical tastes.

do you not think that what they had wasnt a caricature, it was their own unique raw sound tho? Yes, I agree. By caricature, I meant they did not want to become one by keeping with that sound and repeating it ad nauseum. I know some listeners clamor for the sound that they fell in love with, but the Chili Peppers sound the way they do because they are a diverse group. That diversity is almost always bound to bring on change. susannah said: What they're doing now, i think, is more a sanding down, if you will, of how they used to be, rather than a growth.
That's one way of looking at it. You might be right. Either way, I think "By The Way" and "Californication" are good albums. I'm a songwriter, so I don't really care if they play like they used to. I just wanna hear some good melodies. They appear to be doing what feels good to them and it rocks my socks when I'm in the gym (rhyme not intended).

The title of the thread is "Do you like Red Hot Chili Peppers". It doesn't say "contribute only if you like it". I don't hate The Red Hot Chili Peppers, there certainly is no need to. I just think it's generally in a completely different musical category than most of the music that I personally listen to. It's Britney Spears for the boys, whereas Britney Spears is Britney Spears for the girls in the same age group that buy these records. Just an observation. I was attempting to subtly poke fun at my own dismissive comments in all of my posts, thank you for completely not getting it.
