Janet Jackson..."If" Appreciation Thread (Vainandy, please read this) For anyone that figured back in the May 1993 that Janet, Jimmy, & Terry slow the damn tempo/BPM down forever after the release of That's The Way Love Goes from the janet album.....
September 1993, janet would shock the world (and the dancefloors for that matter) with the release of If as the second single from THAT same janet album! THIS song (as well as the full version of the video) was the biggest reason why I brought the janet album. I remember playing THIS song (and Anytime, Anyplace) waaaaayyyyy more often than any of the other songs from that album. As for the CD single, I love ALL of the remixes that were included. And yes, Janet's cover of The Jackson's One More Chance was THE perfect choice of a b-side (not to mention that her brother Randy was very underrated as a songwriter at the time). And please don't sleep on the extended version (THE real version, IMHO) of If. Even now, if Virgin/EMI Records ever release a Janet Jackson Greatest Hit album, I hope they use this version because it does a lot of justice for Janet & her fans!

I like the song "If". That one and "Throb" are two of the best tracks on the album. However, the fact that she chose to use a hip hop vibe, whatsoever on the album, especially at a crucial time when hip hop was first starting to take over R&B, turned me off worse than any highlights on the album and I dropped her quickly afterwards.
My motto has always been...."Don't join 'em, beat 'em". . . [Edited 8/24/05 23:51pm] Andy is a four letter word.

I always dug this song and will definately look for the single in order to hear the extended verison. Sounds great. Janet proved and still proves she can kill on the dancefloor when she wants to.

Blige country when she went hip-hop soul on everyone that were fans of Erotica!!!). But I liked this album too: I know Tessa might disagree with me, but these were examples of Madonna & Janet copying each other here & there.

The last thing of Madonna's that I bought was "Erotica", which is my favorite album of her's. When Madonna did her hip hop thing, it wasn't at a crucial turning point though. Janet's was and all we needed at the time was someone as hot as she had recently been to make a splash and drive hip hop back underground. Instead, she chose to join them which helped it to grow to even bigger heights. . . [Edited 8/24/05 23:59pm] Andy is a four letter word.

Blige were very respondible for changing Black Radio formats forever by droping the tempo to the 95 BPM mark in rap, hip-hop, & R&B. But Janet putting the nail in the coffin by releasing That's The Way Love Goes? ...and to think that I used to believe that it was only when the music industry started to only take the "gangsta" style of rap seriously (and said the hell with the other rap styles like Public Enemy's political style), it was THAT point that everything would change for the worst. Thanks Vainandy for giving me something to think about.
