Yes there have been numerous MJ/Prince threads but for what its worth my opinion on MJ is this:

He is/was a very talented singer/performer who will go down in history as a very troubled but talented individual. However, were I have a problem with him musically is when some people try to compare him to Prince, what is all that about? Prince will go down in history as a musical genious who pushed the boundaries on so many different levels that to compare him to MJ is an insult. If he has to be compared to anyone should it not be the Beatles, Bowie or Mozart.....

its this kinda shit that pisses me off, michael jackson is a musical genius, most musicians would put him ahead of prince in every respect except the ability to actually play instruments. And MJ is way more talented than Bowie, MJ can produce his own music, which bowie has never done.

Bowie/Madonna/Bjork yes
MJ is kinda in a league of his own
then u have ppl like Prince/Sly/Stevie

What planet are you from? Maybe the same on MJ is.

Why is MJ in a league of his owm? He's just like everyone else. Is he THAT gifted? If so, why is it he has produced a fraction of the material that Madonna, Prince or Bowie have done. If he is SO gifted why has he been in a musical quagmire since Thriller? Why does everything after except a few songs sound dated? Why has he yet to even come close to anything resebling a hit in the past decade?

I don't want to dis MJ...I do believe he has talent, though he has not displayed any in a long time. And if you are going to say he is a musical genius...you need to back that up. I may not have all of my Bowie facts, but I believe he is 10 times more artistic and creative than MJ ever will be. SHeer output speaks this truth.

Was a huge fan when I first registered here.. then I gradually woke up.

Rather than believing he's innocent simply because of sketchy families (most people who hang around stars are sketchy, anyway), I now think he was probably guilty. Too much, too many times, and too many people involved, and no amount of technical details about a wacky mother and hick lead DA or butt-kissing articles that "prove" his innocence are going to change that for me.

Remember the days when I used to ramble on trying to convince everybody the "Bad" album was original and underappreciated? lol I now realize that every album he's done since "Thriller" is overproduced, topically redundant pop rubbish with merely a couple saving graces. Michael Jackson is no musical genius to me: Anybody can write a catchy-ass pop song or produce rough demos with repetitive, simple melodies and lyrics.. he'd hardly be anywhere if it weren't for Quincy Jones' arranging, producing, and musician-selecting prowess and the predictable of-the-moment producers he's chosen since the late '80s that allow him to overcook their sound just because he's obsessed with making his records sound perfect and sell like hotcakes.

He's hardly the greatest performer of all time.. not only is he a shameless, overly rehearsed lip-syncher and old-hat dancer, but since the "Victory" tour with his brothers, he's done almost nothing but feed his audiences the same old cheap, rehashed shit, topped off with some unimpressive pyrotechnics and showy stunts. bored

And even if he's never laid a hand on a child in his life nor committed anything else inappropriate with them, I still think he's an extremely fucked-up man who's long overdue for therapy. Look at what he's done to himself, surgically.. that isn't the face of a sane man. And I just about pissed myself whenever that thread about how he was telling the truth when he said he's only had two surgeries was made. falloff How does one acquire obvious huge facial changes that just about everybody has noticed over the years, a hideous pixie nose and severe upper lip nerve damage solely from aging and two little nose jobs? And before anybody says that people are being shallow when they dissect his plastic surgery, anybody that gets as much surgery as him in the first place and cares so much about his own looks is the shallow one, not us.

Did I mention his ego? Sure, some fans just LOVE it or don't even notice it, but to me, any man who floats a giant statue of himself down the River of Thames like some lunatic and has a painting of himself in the place of Christ in "The Last Supper" is nothing but a tremendeous, deluded wanker.

Even if his sexuality doesn't matter, I think he's mostly likely gay or bisexual, and if neither of those then at least plagued with major-league identity issues. Generally, normal, healthy heterosexual men don't haplessly parade around wearing nearly every kind of femininine makeup available, nor do they love leather and sequins as much as he does and brush their hair away from their eyes just like a woman.

A good deal (but notice I didn't say ALL) of his hardcore fans are as off-kilter as their idol.. no explanation necessary.

And that's about it. I don't care if I get thrashed for anything I said, either. It's my honest opinion and I'm entitled to it.

Bullshit.

What musicicans have been quoted as citing MJ as a great musician? I can give you hundreds of quotes from established legendary musicians (young and old) who go on and on of the musical genius that is Prince. Michael's accolades and positive speak are rarely about what a great musician he is. Performer and entertainer? Yes. Musician? No. So again I ask, what musician heralds Mj over Prince as far as musicianship goes? No one. One might prefer Mj to Prince, but no one who knows anything about musicianship places MJ above Prince in that regard. I say this to you as a fan of both MJ and Prince.

Why don't you give us a list of David Hasslehoff's hits in Germany while you are at it? Don't get me wrong, I love the UK, but their charts are just as shitty as the USA's charts. They mean nothing. The fact that Prince's only #1 in the UK was The Most Beautiful Girl in the World says a lot.

Okay, so you like MJ during "thriller". Hey congrats you are in the same boat as THE REST OF THE CIVILIZED WORLD.

I find most of your statements agreeable, but Prince fans calling MJ "weird" is always funny to me. Prince has done a ton of "strange" things.

ACTUALLY Hasselhoff was only ever big in Austria to be pedantic wink He had like 2 hits in Germany in the late 80s and that was it - or so a lot of German people tell me when I try to take the piss.

At least the UK charts are based on sales (only this year downloads were included too), and our radio stations aren't sectioned into genres with all these crappy rules and percentages over which genre station should count more than another for the charts.

It was MUCH harder to get a #1 in the 80s. A #10 hit in 1985 would probably sell twice as much as a #1 hit now or 5 years ago. Prince's chart success is fine.

my opinion is more about what he should do with himself and/or his career now.

i think he should lay low until late 2009, and then put something out on the 40th anniversary of the first J5 single. it should be just a 10-track/45 or 50-minute album of pop & r&b love songs. sure, but a few mid-tempo things on there. but no a) save the world songs or b) no "poor, pitiful me" songs. something very scaled down. and scale down the promotion. not every album has to be put on the market like it's the second coming of jesus christ. those days are over. not just for him, but everybody else in the business as well. but especially for him. just be low-key. if it tanks, fine. he's not out anything and he's not too embarrassed. but i have a feeling if he just acts like he's got some sense and the thing doesn't get overblown, it'll foster a lot more good will with the public and will take off on its own steam.

Oh pipe down, everyone doesn't hate America. It's more like people hate American government policy and the "we're number one, fuck everyone else" stance, which unfortunately some people are too dim to look at things from a different angle and form their own opinion.

One More Chance - 5

A few hits there, me thinks. You need to look outside once in a while. smile

Um ok. Point taken. Maybe I need to move to the UK where he actually gets airplay.

But still I haven't heard anything or seen anything that screams genius IMO.

You make some good points there. I don't think he's tired retread. But compare anything from thriller and before that to ANYTHING he has done since. The timeless quality is gone from most of the songs.
