Inside Edition I didn't catch all of what was said, because I was in bed, but on Inside Edition last night they were talking about how many people lip sync in their concerts. They talked a lot about Britney doing it (which I think we all knew anyway), but also Janet and some others. Someone can take a studio recording and make it sound like it's live so that they can use it in their concerts.
Anyway...what I thought was nice was that someone on there, who used to work with Prince (I think), said that he sings every single note live at all of his shows. I just thought it was nice that he got recognition for that, because to me, if you are a musician and performer, if you can't sing live on stage...what's the point?

There was a time in the late 90's where Prince lipsynched ALOT. Even in the JOTY tour he was lipsynching chunks of songs.
This tour, he has sung 99% EVERY note. The last Hit and Run he sang every note too, aside from the sample in If I Was Your Girly and the Kiss bass thump off thingy. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I think in certain situations the artist is told they must lip sync if it is being broadcasted on tv around the world. But, when performmed live at a concert, there should never be any lip syncing. After seeing Prince Saturday night, he doesn't need to. His falsetto is still perfect IMO. He has one of the nicest vocal ranges for a pop/funk artist. I was completely blown away the other night by the quality of his voice.

I am in total agreement with you. I think every concert should be performed live. If someone isn't really singing it live, it makes me wonder if they can even sing at all. I could understand if there were throat problems involved or something of that nature, but to lip sync pretty much each and every concert is something else entirely.

It's hard to do a live show with all that choreography and sing live. It's virtually impossible, no matter how good you sing. Try it yourself. Put on a NSynch Record and try to do all those moves and sing at the same time and see if you don't hear a lot of huffing and puffing, running out of breath. I think some of the groups would switch and do some songs live and the more elaborate ones lip synced. I listened to Brtiney do a slow song live (was it Michael Jackson's thing), it was terrible.
I agree though, I didn't come to see a dancing and singing - save that for the video. Just give me some live music and some live singing. LQ

Hmmm, tough one. I honestly think most heavily choreographed artists lip-sync thru most their concerts, but, I truly believe Prince does it less than most.
I do know that he's one of the very few that still tours without any help from corporate sponsors. U won't find any Pepsi, Coke, or Budweiser "presents" ads on behalf of Prince. 4 that, I give him much respect. Considering the cost of touring and pre-production, it would cut his costs in half and he'd have that much more profit...and we all know Prince likes his profit! |

Yeah...well, I can see it being done when there are heavy choreographed numbers. Did Madonna lip sync most of her concerts...anyone know?
June7...I didn't realize he didn't use the help of sponsors...interesting.

All this talk about it being impossible to sing live while doing the dance choreography is pure HOGWASH. Anybody that has seen Tina Turner do all that running, strutting, and jumping around while she SANG LIVE back in the late 60s and early 1970s knows it's hogwash. If Prince relied on tapes for his vocals for even one concert he was just lazy. The others do it because they just DONT HAVE THE VOCAL SKILLS. Stop letting these talentless performers pull the wool over your eyes and wake up to their incompetence and pure lies.
