most powerful BREAK-UP songs

i think this one is at the top of the list:

CAN'T FIGHT IT
Bob Mould

And it's strange to watch the things we had all fade away
It all seemed so certain, It all seemed so permanent
And I'm sure no one else suspected
anything was wrong
It all seemed so perfect,
Our house was built on good intentions
Promise not to see it end this way
So unsure of what remains at home
Nothing left in common
We faced up to all the fear s, it's time for consequences

it's gone and I can't find it
You're gone and I can't fight it

Divied up the friendships that we used to share
Try and understand me if I stumble now and then
Some miscommunication stood between both you and I
You made your decision, here's hoping it's the right one
But God knows this decision you can't change
And I can never hold you down again this I understand
So please forgive the tears there's no turning back

it's gone and I can't find it
You're gone and I can't fight it

You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart
by Eurythmics

Take me to the desert
Where there’s got to be
A whole heap of nothing
For you and me
Take me to the desert
Take me to the sand
Show me the colour of your right hand.

Love is a temple
Love is a shrine
Buy some love at the five and dime
A little bit of love
From the counter store
Get it on credit if you need some more.
I’ll the figure of your disgrace
A criss cross pattern upon your face
A woman’s just too tired to think
About the dirty old dishes in the kitchen sink.

I wish I was invisible
So I could climb through the telephone
When it hurts my ear
And it hurts my brain
And it makes me feel too much
Too much too much too much.
Don’t cut me down
When I’m talking to you
’cause I’m much too tall
To feel that small.

Love is a temple
Love is a shrine
Love is pure
And love is blind
Love is a religious sign
I’m gonna leave this love behind.
Love is hot and love is cold
I’ve been bought and I’ve been sold
Love is rock and love is roll
I just want someone to hold.

big fan of "i better be quiet now' by elliott smith.

wish you gave me a number
wish i could call you today,
just to hear a voice.

i got a long way to go
getting further away.

if i didn't know the difference,
living alone would probably be ok.
it wouldn't be lonely.

i got a long way to go
getting further away.

a lot of hours to occupy -
it was easy, when i didn't know you yet,
things i'd have to forget.

but i better be quiet now,
i'm tired of wasting my breath
carrying on, getting upset.

maybe i have a problem,
but thats not what i wanted to say.
i prefer to say nothing.

i got a long way to go
getting further away.

had a dream as an army man with an order
just to march in my place
but a dead enemy
screams in my face

but i better be quiet now,
i'm tired of wasting my breath
carrying on, not over it yet.

wish i knew what you were doing.
why you want to do it this way.
so i can't go the distance,

i got a long way to go,
i'm getting further away.
i got a long way to go
getting further away.

Cassanova Brown by Teena Marie ranks up there to me, you can tell she really loved Rick James alot and it hurt her to let him go.

I'll Never Get Over You (Getting Over Me) - Expose

I hear you're taking the town again
Having a good time with all your good time friends
I don't think that you think of me
You're on your own now, and I'm alone and free
I know that I oughta get on with my life
But a life lived without you could never be right

Chorus:
And as long as the stars shine down from the heavens
Long as the rivers run to the sea
I'll never get over you
Getting over me

I try to smile so the hurt won't show
Tell everybody I was glad to see you go
But the tears just won't go away
Loneliness found me, looks like it's here to stay
I know that I oughta find someone new
But all I find is myself always thinking of you

chorus

No matter what I do
It's like a lifetime to live through
I can't go on like this
I need your touch
You're the only one I've ever loved
And as long as the stars shine down from the heavens
Long as the rivers run to the sea
I'll never get over you
Getting over me
I'll never get over you
Getting over...
Never get over you getting over...
I'll never get over you
Getting over me
You can't experience the unknown will of God on your life until your doing the known will of God.

This is the end of everything this is the end I know.
This is the end of everything take your love with you when you go.
This is the end of happiness this is the end dreams.
This is the end of everything it's the end for you and me

I don't know what to do.
In my heart I still love you.

I don't know what to say.
I will always feel this way.

This is the end of everything, take your love with you when you go.

One of the Best songs of all times

November Rain

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain
We've been through this such a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain
But lovers always come and lovers always go
An no one's really sure who's lettin' go today
Walking away
If we could take the time to lay it on the line
I could rest my head
Just knowin' that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin'
In the cold November rain

Do you need some time...on your own
Do you need some time...all alone
Everybody needs some time...on their own
Don't you know you need some time...all alone
I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you

Sometimes I need some time...on my
own Sometimes I need some time...all alone
Everybody needs some time...on their own
Don't you know you need some time...all alone

And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain, ohhh yeahhh
I know that you can love me
When there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
Even cold November rain

Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one

Anxiety

Crowds
by Bauhaus
(not that they're bitter or anything)

What do you want of me
What do you long from me
A slim Pixie, thin and forlorn
A count, white and drawn
What do you make of me
What can you take from me
Pallid landscapes off my frown
Let me rip you up and down
For you I came to forsake
Lay wide despise and hate
I sing of you in my demented songs
For you and your stimulations
Take what you can of me
Rip what you can off me
And this I'll say to you
And hope that it gets through
You worthless bitch
You fickle shit
You will spit on me
You will make me spit
And when the Judas howl arise
And like the Jesus Jews you epitomize
I'll still be here as strong as you
And I'll walk away in spite of you
And I'll walk away
Away
Walk away
(repeat)

...though this is probably more about critics and fickle fans than it is about a break-up, it's still one of my favorite pissy-indulgent bitter break-up songs. nod

You know what? That one kinda works for me too! I remember going through some crazy emotional drama because of some rock star wanna be lover of mine at the time, and I was completely feelin' that song, especially once I saw the VIDEO---good grief---you would have thought I was the poor man's version of the Madonna character in that video lol !

fuck all you haters...

On My Own

So many times
Said it was forever
Said our love would always be true
Something in my heart always knew
I'd be lying here beside you
On my own
On my own
On my own

So many promises never should be spoken
Now I know what loving you cost
Now we're up to talking divorce
And we weren't even married
On my own
Once again now
One more time
By myself

No one said it was easy
But it once was so easy
Well I believed in love
Now here I stand
I wonder why

I'm on my own
Why did it end this way
On my own
This wasn't how it was supposed to be
On my own
I wish that we could do it all again

So many times
I know I should have told you
Losing you it cut like a knife
You walked out and there went my life
I don't want to live without you
On my own
On my own
On my own
Chorus Repeat

This wasn't how it was supposed to end
I wish that we could do it all again
I never dreamed I'd spend one night alone
On my own, I've got to find where I belong again
I've got to learn how to be strong again
I never dreamed I'd spend one night alone
By myself by myself
I've got to find out what was mine again
My heart is saying that it's my time again
And I have faith that I will shine again
I have faith in me
On my own
On my own
On my own
Space for sale...

4 Seasons of Loneliness by Boyz II Men

I long for the warmth of days gone by
When you were mine
But now those days are memories in time
Life’s empty without you by my side
My heart belongs to you
No matter what I try
When I get courage up to love somebody new
It always falls apart ’cause they just
Can’t compare to you
You love won’t release me
I’m bound under ball and chain
Reminiscing our love as I watch four season’s change

Chorus:
In comes the winter breeze
That chills the air and drifts the snow
And I imagine kissing you under the mistletoe
When springtime makes it’s way here
Lilac blooms reminds me of the scent of your perfume
When summer burns with heat
I always get the hots for you
Go skinny dippin’ in the ocean where we used to do
When autumn sheds the leaves the trees are bare
When you’re not here it doesn’t feel the same
Remember the nights when we closed our eyes
And vowed that you and I would be in love for all time
Anytime I think about these things is shared with you
I break down and cry ’cause I get so emotional
Until you release me I’m bound under ball and chain
Reminiscing our love as I watch four seasons change

Chorus
This loneliness
Has crushed my heart
Please let me love again
’cause I need your love to comfort me and ease my pain
Or four seasons will bring the loneliness again

what a beautiful song. mushy
