Yep that was me who brought that up and I'm still trying to find Dark Magus and Live-Evil at alot of wrecka stows but they don't have copies of them. Guess I'll have to get those from Amazon. Anyway, I haven't stopped playing Agharta yet and On The Corner is just his funkiest studio outing, hands down.

I think i'm going through almost the exact same feelings that you are in discovering the music of Miles Davis. I also recently bought Agharta and it's been in my car cd player ever since i've purchased it 6 weeks ago. It's SO DAMN FUNKY especially Prelude 1 & 2.The saxophone, percussion and guitar...the amazing climax towards the end of the first prelude makes me bounce all over the place! I'm not a musician AT ALL so I can't explain the technics of the music but I can only explain how the music stikes such sincere and true emotional chords in me.

I've also been on a purchasing frenzy of Miles Davis discs lately.I'm hooked!
Miles Smiles,Agharta,Aura,In A Silent Way(so very lovely!)Neferetti,Sketches Of Spain,Kind Of Blue...WAY TOO MUCH AMAZING MUSIC TO TAKE IN ALL AT ONCE!

Listening to many of these albums makes me realize just how much of an influence I think Miles was on Prince's music. When I think about the funky brilliance of On The Corner(one of my very favorites so far) i'm so reminded of The Rainbow Children.I think musically it was a big influence on Prince...even the "cartoonish" album cover of TRC reminds me of ONC.

I need months, years to try to articulate some of the essence of what this music means to me. In the meantime, let's discuss and share the magic of this discovery.

BTW,what should I get next? I can't find Bitches Brew, but i'm sure I can order it online....and how does Pangaea compare to Agharta?

I have that Electric Miles DVD & u won't be disappointed. Very good interviews with former band members. People can say what they want about Miles but he set the jazz standard.

Get 'em all. But I'd say Bitches Brew is the most vital.

Yeah, Bitches Brew was the record that had all of the fusion-jazz giants on there and they are just creating magic with Miles in their own way. It's very important, so pick that one up ASAP. Oh, and if you want more to add with that, get The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions boxset, but beware because you'll have to shell out $60 bucks on it.

Welcome to the journey. cool

You've already looked "over the edge" if you've got Agharta (Pangaea could be considered its brother).
The only way to go deeper into the abyss would be Dark Magus.

Consider backtracking a bit to see how he got there by copping A Tribute to Jack Johnson first, then Bitches Brew.

Just my twocents

Enjoy

That would be a very limiting characterization for this music.
Yes, it's got a funk component, but there's a lot more going on musically.

Yes Miles is THE MAN!!!! I bought his albums by the bucketload a few years ago and I am continually blown away with each spin. The man was an absolute genius and his constant search for new sounds kept him fresh and pushing the boundaries of music. In A Silent Way, Kind of Blue, Porgy and Bess, Jack Johnson, Bitches Brews, Sketches Of Spain, Agharta and Get Up With It are some of the greates albums ever released. Discovering Miles Davis' catalog is something that I will always treasure and it brings me the same excitement I found when I really got into Prince. Miles heavily influenced Prince not only in sound, but also in the way he tirelessly searched for new sounds and textures with each subsequent release.

The A Different Kind of Blue Electric Miles DVD is damn good(just ignore Mr. Doucebag A.K.A. Stanley Crouch) , I started a thread about it a few months ago.The 37min concert alone is worth the price of the DVD. It's also nice to hear Joni Mitchell, Chic Corea, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarret etc. talk about Miles. And watching Carlos Santana play the opening of In A Silent Way on electric guitar is mindblowing.

He Was Too Cool!

Yeah, that autobiography is so informative and hilarious. It's like he's sitting in the room telling u the stories. VERY good read. He had a great deal to say abou the music biz, racism, and Prince. I highly recommend it.
