Guns challenged the cheesiness of Heavy Metal in a musical sense, but they were not much more enlightened attitude-wise than your average metal band. And it wasn't cute like the Rolling Stones, it was angry & ignorant & musically self-destructive considering Axl still can't get it together.

Challenged cheesiness? Wasnt "cute" like th e Stones? Wha? They had Appetite and their first ep that was authentic rage. After that, they became Elton John. I mean come on. Axl would even attest to this. His grand band pomp piano ballads/rock. Elton even dueted in 92 on piano with them for November Rain (a rip off of Eltons style if there ever was one).

GnR were VERY cheesy.

The authentic rage you refer to is the challenge to metal's cheesy sound that I'm referring to. Axl's emotional problems & politically incorrect lyrics aren't cute like, say, Bitch or Brown Sugar. They're just disturbed & ignorant. That's why I say their attitude was just as cheesy as Motley Crue's.

But just cause November Rain was lame doesn't make their initial impact on hard rock any less.

They became cheesy. They had violin players, 23 keyboardists , lol

Even Dizzy Reed admits to it.

GnR were probably the greatest hard rock band of their era. Appetite for Destruction was a really fantastic rock albu. I've always like the Use Your Illusion albums but thought they could have been condensed to one album. They're also one of those acts where I have to ignore their ignorant comments/politics and just enjoy the music (like Foo Fighters, on a much smaller scale).

It's not so much "have" a piano at concerts. But when you have piano "SOLOS" with horn sections, no no no!

Yeah by the end it all got out of control and went over the top. Two of the original five members had left/been sacked, they took an orchestra with them on tour and lost touch with the music that made them popular in the first place, largely due to Axl.

Have you heard the lyrics to Angel of Death? They sympathize with the Nazi doctor Joseph Menghele and what he did in Auschwitz. Plus their guitarist collects Nazi memorabilia and as mentioned has a Swastika on his guitar.

isn't that just stchick, I know Kerry King and the others are the real deal, but Tom Araya is not white...and when I was listening to them I never bothered to listen to the lyrics. Is Typo Negative also racist, I mean, in metal, alot of it is an act.

Yes, I remember hearing they were a white power band. Pretty disgusting, huh.

You can't help but feel warm all over when that Guns N'Roses tune gets played at a bar. It's always a fantastic feeling, "Civil War" or something else silly like that.

I like 'em. I got round to buying "use ur illusion" not so long ago.

And i dont care if its pompous shit, I love "november rain" and that crazy ass video that made no sense. That was one expensive video. That was the only video to really challange one of jackos in the budget stakes. Oh and hammer.

"welcome to the jungle", even when heard a zillion times, is always a blast.

Axl weres those sickening tight sppedos on stage sometimes. Yet guns and roses fans booed prince at the rock and rio festival neutral Didn't they realize that axl looked more of a fag then Prince biggrin

Dizzy Reed? He didn't join till they were already "cheesy."

Dizzy joined around the Use Your Illusion era and he's still in the new Guns N' Roses. I think its completely wrong that Axl uses the name Guns N' Roses for his new band, it shows a sign of desperation, he needs the name to be successful otherwise not too many people would care about his new shit. At least Prince changed the name of his band when he got rid of the Revolution.

Yep, Velvet Revolver is more Guns n Roses than Guns n Roses at this point. Still I would be curious to hear Chinese Democracy. He'd better release it soon or it's gonna be brand new and 10 years outdated.

Unlike the other members Axl wasn't addicted to Heroin, he took it thats for sure but he said he could stop whenever he wanted to.

Hmm, since when do we believe a heroin user who says he can "stop whenever they want to?"

That said, I think you're right, and Axl's didn't have the same problem the rest of the band did. He had other problems.

Well the point was they became cheesy...that was the pont being debated. It doesn't matter if Dizzy joined when they became cheese(which he didn't..he was right before the cheez era lol) or if some become cheesy at some point in their career (and no, not everyone becomes that).

Well, it seems we had different points. My point was that in the beginning their music was not cheesy in comparison to other metal that was popular at the time. That was the point of the initial post, too:

Sexy Mofo said: "Back in the late 80's they saved rock n roll from shitty bands like Poison and Def Leppard. They brought back a lot of grit back into rock music. Everyone should own a copy of Appetite for Destruction, it's no doubt one of the best albums ever made, there's absolutely no filler on it."

If I refer to what The Stones or Metallica or McCartney did for music, I'm probably not going to be talking about their worst music which had virtually no impact on music as a whole, I'm going to be referring to their best stuff.

And my point about Dizzy was that he wasn't with Guns from the beginning. It'd mean more if Slash said they got cheesy.
