Maxwell's "Embrya" - the song

I still always press "stop" when this track starts at the end of Maxwell's "Embrya" album - which is kind of strange because that's exactly the kind of music I mostly listen to anyway. It's not that different to, say Ab Ovo, Lexaunculpt or some of the Pan Sonic derivatives. Not as good, but not terrible experimental electronic music by any means. Ambient, minimal, a bit noisy even.

Maybe it's because I was younger when the album came out, and while I was able to appreciate the guy putting a piece like that on a very anticipated mainstream R&B (let's face it) release, the album always sort of ended with "Eachhour..." to me. I used to love that song so much I always had to play it several times in a row.

So has anybody else been jammin' to "Embrya", the song, lately?

'Embrya' isn't really a 'song' now is it? It's a type of entering the womb Maxwell-type statment in him ending the album. I always saw this album as his 'birth-to-birth' album - he's born during track 0 (Gestation) and then lives through his songs until 'Embrya' where he is reborn.

Regardless the opening track 'EVERWANTING:TO WANT YOU TO WANT' is one of THE finest love-making songs out there...period!

I like it. I've had the album since the day of it's release and only
found out last year that the album has a "hidden" track!

Just start the disc to play "Everwanting: To Want You To Want" and
then press fast rewind, it then goes back further than the first
song, revealing track "0: Gestation" which is just as weird if not
even weirder than "Embrya".

Try it, it rocks!

nod

This is a highly underappreciated album and I love the chances he took with tracks like Gestation and Embrya.

I love this album too. I usually skip "Embrya", the song because there's no vocals anyway.

I also found out recently about the hidden track which is track 00, because it is before track "01" if that makes sense. Again, no Maxwell vocals on this one either.

The English language doesn't have a great overall word for covering both instrumental pieces of music and pieces of sung music. The title of this thread would have looked silly if it would have read "Embrya - the track".
